Hamlet Essay Topics 1. Discuss the character of Ophelia. What does she represent in the play? Discuss the events leading up to and the consequences of her death. 2. What is Hamlet’s fatal flaw? 3. Discuss the theme of rot, disease, and the unnatural in the play. 4. Discuss Hamlet’s relationship with one other character (Claudius, Gertrude, Horatio or the duo of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, etc.)

5. Discuss the role of the ghost in the play. Consider how, when, and to whom he appears.
Does this add another important character in the play? 6. Discuss Shakespeare’s use of imagery or classical allusions in the play. 7. Discuss the various deaths in the play starting with the death of Hamlet Senior. What message is Shakespeare sending about the various circumstances surrounding murder, accidental death, and suicide 8. Discuss the religious significance of the play. 9. Discuss the use of the play actors in Hamlet. 10. Discuss the influence of foreign lands in the play. These are general topics. To create a thesis from these topics you must create an argument.
For example, if you choose #5, you are not just comparing Hamlet to Rosencrantz and
Guildenstern. You would need to prove in your essay that the characters of Rosencrantz and
Guildenstern are there to show how Hamlet is truly good, how he is truly sane, and to highlight the tragedy that is his death. This is an argument you would need to prove with evidence because one could easily argue that these characters show that he is evil, insane, and a murderer.

    5. Read Hamlet's second soliloquy carefully (1.5.92-113). What does Hamlet say he has learned? In other words, what general piece of wisdom does he want to save from this encounter (1.5.109). Is this shockingly new information to us? Or is Hamlet just becoming "grown up"? (When did you first learn that you couldn't always trust people?) Notice how quickly Hamlet moves from the specific (Claudius) to the general ("one"). Compare the same movement he makes from the specific person Gertrude to "frailty, thy name is woman" (1.2.146). Given this soliloquy, how soon would you expect Hamlet to go for his revenge?…

Les Brown once said ,"The question is- if you die today what ideas, what dreams, what abilities, what talents, what gifts, would die with you? Think about it" he and the main character of Shakespeare's Hamlet have a similar way of thinking. This quote makes you think, what's the point in having aspirations, what is the point in living, what is the point in love, what is the point in anything if we all are going to die and leave it all behind . These two men have a very insensitive way of asking these questions, but the questions are indeed great questions. These questions can trigger so many different emotions and thoughts. In Shakespeare's Hamlet, Hamlet deals with internal and external turmoil, causing him to ask universal questions…

    Hamlet's Paranoia

Hamlet, the eponymous hero of Shakespeare’s greatest work, descends swiftly into madness and paranoia after the murder of his father and the realization of his mother’s true, morally reprehensible, nature. As a result of these new responsibilities and extreme circumstances, Hamlet diverges from his usual, logical thinking into paranoia and over analysis, a condition that prevents him from trusting anyone. Hamlet, having been born a prince, is, for the first time, forced to make his own decisions after he learns of the true means of his father’s death. Another contributing factor to his madness is the constant probing of others into Hamlet’s sanity. These factors all contribute to Hamlets delay, and that delay contributes to the tragic downfall of Billy Shakespeare’s most brilliant hero at the hands of a distraught and vengeful Laertes.…
