Towards the beginning of the interview, many closed ended questions were asked, questions that did require long answers. Some of those questions consisted of: “how are you today?’, “ How old is he.?”, “How long has your son been staying with your parents?” Those questions were asked to get the facts of the situation as a whole and to be to better engage with Emilia.
Once the preliminary or closed-ended questions were done, she started asking open ended questions. An open ended question that was important for the situation was: “...tell me about your relationship with your parents right now.” This allows her to address her opinion about her relationship with her parents. a little bit more and she is not answering straight facts. She constantly let Emilia know what she was following along with that she was saying. She was also really good at asking open ended question to assure that she was executing engagement skills correctly. One thing that the social worker might work on is her position towards the client. They were not parallel to each other. The client was looking and sitting straight ahead while the social worker was facing in another direction. She also had her legs crossed and that might have made the client feel a little uncomfortable.
