a. Diagnostic-Related groups is a prospective payment systems. With hospitals, it can be a major pitfall. Patients will come in ill, but not be in the best condition to go home, but well enough. The hospital tries to keep the length of stay short to receive that reimbursement. However, although they try to treat these patients within a short period of time, sometimes they fail because they get readmits. There is less comprehensive care that is perhaps being provided in these hospitals. In addition, this gives the hospital social worker limited time to work with the patients and are basically pushed to formulate a quick discharge plan. The social workers are given a limited time, which is an estimated length of stay that they have to work with.

For instance, if a patient is being discharged from the hospital after having complications, found out that their kidneys are failing and that they have to go to dialysis for the rest of their life, and is only in their mid 20’s this can affect their health mentally and physically. Let’s say that the social worker explained their discharge plan, reviewed their medications with them as well as their treatment plan, explained the process of the transplant, and was stern with saying “If you don’t go to dialysis, it is possible you can die.” Imagine hearing that at the age of 25. Mentally, the patient can think all kinds of negative thoughts, have depressive moments, possibly question what is the purpose of living and all sorts of
