Battle Zone
We read the story of Beowulf and then watched the movie The 13th Warrior. Both of these epic stories were from around the same time period. I noticed that there were many similarities and differences between the two stories. Strength in battle had played a huge role in Beowulf and The 13th Warrior.
After watching The 13th Warrior, I realized that there were many similarities to the story of Beowulf. The people in the movie like to relax, drink, dance, and laugh as the Anglo-saxons did. In both stories, the people’s main source of transportation came from ships and horses. The beast called “monster” that hunts the hall in the movie also hunts at night in the mist just like Grendel does. The men also use the tactic from Beowulf to fake falling asleep to capture the wendol’s. Some of the characters in Beowulf were used in the movie, for example, Wulfgar and Hrothgar. There were not a lot of similarities do to religion. The only thing I found was in the beginning, Ahmed said, “I found the perfect women but she belonged to another man”(McTieran). This shows some Christianity because he did not commit adultery. The other similarly I found was when Ahmed saw all the skulls and said, “These are not men”(McTieran). He said this because the Wendol’s had killed so many innocent people throughout villages. This shows a little that Ahmed is against killing. Adultery and murder is part of the Ten Commandments in Christianity.
Throughout both stories, there were very few differences that I could find. A small difference was that the people in the movie also used camels for transportation in the beginning of the movie. In Beowulf, there was an outside wall protected the hall. In the movie, the hall lacked any form of defense such as walls. There was basically nothing protecting the area. The people in the movie mourned for their king after their lives were taken. Wherein Beowulf, it was the opposite. There were not many
