Freytag’s Triangle

Expository- character, setting
UNFORGIVEN
Exposition-
Ex. Cowboy assault, glimpse into what the cowboys are like, where we are roughly, vague idea of what century
Initial Conflict- (begins rising action) - between the protagonist and one of the antagonistic forces
Ex. Kid comes to the farm asking him to help in the killing, see Will as a pig farmer, made to look out of place
Rising Action (dramatic tension)- builds in tension and conflict, is working toward the climax, don’t want to overdue up to the climactic scene, doesn’t make as big as an effect, involves protagonist and the antagonist
Ex. Will Munny and Lil Bill- Will is shooting at the coffee can and it shows that he has lost any skill he once had, Lil Bill has conflict with English Bob; he deals with English Bob and shows him as ruthless, brutal, Will Munny goes to see Ned and brings Ned along and takes a leadership and convinces Ned to come along on the killing, Ned serves as his living conscious like Claudia once did, Will settles the dispute between the kid and Ned, important that the Kid cannot shoot, which is ironic because it was his idea to do the killing so Will has to take on a leadership role as the main killer
Climax (point of highest tension, point at which the rest of plot becomes inevitable)- when Will learns that Ned is dead, when he learns that Ned is dead, he picks up that bottle, which is the tangible thing that links Ned between his old life and his new life, when he throws the whiskey bottle in the path in front of him, the whiskey is leading him toward the climactic scene
Falling action- tells the Kid to leave with the money, sees Ned displayed in front of Greeley’s, show down with Lil Bill and he rides out of town and still has a chance to be killed, but he escapes from the deputy not wanting to shoot
Resolution- goes back to the county, get’s his kids, and is rumored that he moves to San Francisco and is rich in dry goods

    5. innovation and value: pioneers: new product introductions, new-to-word product add tremendous value to firms, establish completely new market, changes rules of competition and consumer preferences (ex. iPod, eBay’s auction model, Internet, BlackBerry, Intel microprocessor). The story of the protagonist is sometimes best developed by the presence of minor characters. Generally the minor characters are used to bring along a change in the lives of the major characters. They are the tools employed to shift the plot or to cause a change. Like in Macbeth it was three witches who set the climax of the play for the way it appears to the audience. Sometimes when the plays become excessively serious or too heavy for the audience to imbibe, the minor characters are employed to add humour and ease the tension. Easing the tension builds up more pity and fear in case of a cathartic climax and in case of other kinds of climax as well the easing of tension is what brings out the final element of shock at the climax. Without the minor characters, the playwright is left with very little space to alter and add layers to the play. A protagonists way of thinking cannot be changed instantly without any external influence, without minor characters, the play becomes predictable and sometimes boring. Sometimes, the audience however might feel that the minor character is not required for the story to develop, this is only a misconception because minor characters play an important role but in furtive ways.…
