Questions on Meaning
1. Ericsson's thesis is when she says, "We lie. We all do. We exaggerate, we minimize, we avoid confrontation, we spare people's feelings, we conveniently forget, we keep secrets, we justify lying to the big-guy institutions." These thesis has several ways people lie in one sentence which foreshadows that Ericsson will talk about certain types of lies aand examples.
2. Ericsson does not think we could eliminate lies from our life. In the essay she states, " It's not easy to entirely eliminate lies from our lives. No matter how pious we may try to be, we will still embellish, hedge, and omit to lubricate the daily machinery of living. But there is a world of diffrence between telling functional lies and living a lie" (p.415,para.35) Ericsson is trying to say that even though we cant prevent ourselves from lying it is better to say the lies that are not for a bad cost.
3. It would't be desirable to eliminate lies from our lives because without them people would not be able to learn how to tolerate their lies. If there was no lies everthing will be true. The pure truth will force every one to belief everthing
It also wouldn't be desirable to eliminate lies from our lives because without them people can get hurt as well. Lies are sometimes to keep sorrow away from people. Without lies less people will learn how to feel guilty and learn from their mistakes. Without lies everthing will be the true and people wouldnt be able to investigate the truth.
4. I think the purpose for this essay is to show us the many ways a person can lie and to make us realize that we live in a world that lives on lies. There are more kinds of lies then the simple lies like a teenager telling her parents she going to the library when she is actually going to a party. For example there are also lies that trick people into buying a product without the seller telling the customer the negative results about the product.
