English Assignment 1 Draft 2
English Assignment 1

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury. Today we will be discussing the case of Eddie Carbone who is sadly no longer with us today. I am sure you understand that I am the only obstacle between us from what is right and what is wrong. Today I will restate the case and going against the prosecutions’ case.
The feud between Eddie Carbone and Marco Adante was obvious. The feud between Eddie Carbone and Rudolpho was blatant. Marco cannot be blamed for the murder of Eddie Carbone. The person who is truly to blame is Rudolpho Adante, he was the main perpetrator in this crime and the reason why Eddie Carbone was killed.
Rudolpho was an obvious attraction to both Beatrice and Catherine, which damaged Eddie’s honour and fuelled his jealousy against Rudolpho. Catherine fell in love with him almost immediately, and he with her. Eddie suggested that Rudolpho only wanted to use Catherine for an American citizenship pass and that was the only reason why Rudolpho would marry Catherine.
Rudolpho also had many obvious signs of having a narcissistic sense about himself. For example one point of time he said that he wanted to stay in America and own a motorbike which is a sign of wealth and also fuels the sense of Rudolpho. Another point in time was when he buys 'American' items like a new jacket and records, rather than sending money to Marco's family. This also shows the selfishness of Rudolpho and raising Eddie’s suspicions of Rudolpho which then caused the argument between Catherine and Eddie over Rudolphos legitimacy.
Rudolpho is also very talented with the fact he can sing, cook and sew. This upsets Eddie as these to him are very feminine skills and talents. The same applies to Rudolpho as he gets upset and cannot understand why his skills and talents affect and are a problem for Eddies “manly” skills. This again also fuels the anger between Rudolpho and Eddie.
People may say and think “Well couldn’t Eddie change for the likes of Rudolpho and Marco?” Well no

Catherine acts very childish in front of Eddie as she finds it hard to stand up to him because he's done so much for her over the course of her life. Catherine is easily upset when she feels she has displeased Eddie and feels she needs his approval for everything that she does: right at the start, she is desperate for him to admire her new skirt “you like it?”. Catherine obeys Eddie and does everything he asks, for example to stop “walking wavy” and for her to take off her high heels “what’s the high heels for, Garbo?”. She doesn’t argue with him and does what Eddie asks almost immediately. She will do anything in her power to make Eddie proud of her.…

The introduction to processed foods took the world by storm, with quicker food preparation, less time spent cleaning, drive-thru access and the introduction to new recipes. Long before processed foods such as the Twinkie, Honey bun, Spam, frozen dinners, milk, etc; people consumed more wholesome foods naturally loaded with nutrients the human body needed to sustain itself. Processed foods did not exist until the early 19th Century and have since become highly advertised and subsidized by the government. Whole foods on the other hand receive little advertisement and no government subsidies, leading people away from choosing a healthier lifestyle. I believe that processed foods may perhaps taste, look and smell better than their natural whole food counterpart does, yet can you really afford to risk your health for the sake of being happy you had the ability to choose your meal?…

Miller shows the importance of loyalty through Eddie telling Catharine the ‘Vinnie Bolzano’ story. Catharine’s reaction shows the audience that in Italy, family loyalty is the most important thing as Catharine is both shocked and horrified that Vinnie snitched on his own Uncle this is why she shockingly says ‘The kid snitched?’. Miller uses this as an opportunity to tell the audience that the Italian American community is very loyal, which makes Eddie’s betrayal even more shocking. Because Vinnie snitched on his Uncle he could never show his face in public because every one despised and loathed him this is why Beatrice says ‘I never seen him again’. This also shows that the Italian American Community has a very ‘if you snitch on one of us, you snitch on all of us’ mentality.…

Eddie always shows his activism through many overt behaviors which even affect his own family for example the night when he is been lock up because of his single protest with a sign ‘I’m not leaving here till I get a drink’ after he was kicked out the bar as an Indigenous people which he is proud of. The following day he quits his job because ‘they cut my [his] pay. Put me [him] on the shore with a stinkin’ sledgehammer’ although he was just locked up for whole night yesterday. His agitation and careless brings many troubles includes both ways of incomes and family relationship to his family, making their happiness on the blink of destruction. In this Italian neighborhood, where Calogero grew up, there were many different dynamics. His father was a bus driver for the city, and always looked out for his son not to get into trouble. One of the main deviant influences in the film was an Italian mafia that operated in a bar across the street. Every day as a young boy, Calogero mimicked what the mobsters were doing, especially Sonny. Sonny was the mafia boss in the neighborhood; Calogero saw how everyone respected him. One day Calogero witnessed Sonny kill a guy in front of his house, which seemed to be over a parking space. When the police came upstairs to ask the boy who did it, he did not “rat.” After the questioning, Calogero said to his father “I did a good thing right? I didn’t rat.” His father responded and said “yes you did a good thing for a bad man.” Calogero didn’t understand why his father said that. The next day Sonny took Calogero under his wing, when this happened he noticed that he was treated differently. And Calogero liked how this new found of respect he got from people in the neighborhood. A couple of mafia guys even offered Calogero’s father a job, but he denied their offer. Calogero’s father chose to live a straight life as a conformist he did not want to affiliate himself with the mafia. No matter how much the family was struggling, no matter how much his wife told him that they can use the extra money. He still did not give in to any of these deviant behaviors. During this time, when he was young, Calogero was…

Catherine and Beatrice’s relationship is very different to the relationship between Eddie & Catherine, Beatrice wants the best for Catherine and wants her to go get the job and wants her to leave, and she is more positive than Eddie and less caring for her. This could be that she was not as committed to the adoption of Catherine compared to Eddie, but also as she has had less to lose because Eddie has paid for her to go through school and to live, whereas Bea is probably getting a little sick of her hanging about. She…
