A physical journey is more than a physical movement. Journeys motivate the travellers to overcome their specific obstacles and undergo change. Journey involves interacting with new people and environments, which ultimately results in the change of the person. The play ‘Away’ by Michael Gow as well as the Poem ‘Sail Through Your Emotions, Don't Sink’ by Bashyam Narayanan and The Film ‘Into the wild’ by Sean Penn all display the concept of the physical journey through their use of dialogue, language, structure and theme. These texts show how the physical journey affects the travellers and causes a change in them.
Set in the post-war period in the Australian summer, where society was concerned with Vietnam and other international conflicts, ‘Away’ revolves around three main families as they go on their holidays. All three families take place in a cyclical physical journey starting at school, going on a holiday, which represents their social class. They are then brought together by a storm, and then end back at the school again and through doing so they go through an emotional journey causing them to change due to catalysts. From the families it is Coral, Gwen and Tom that undergo the biggest changes. Coral’s obstacle in the play is the death of her son in the war, which she needs to overcome and she does this when her husband gets sick of her being depressed and almost leaves her, Roy tells Coral to “Come back to reality”. She learns to live with what has happened and move on. Gwen, in the Play, overcomes her inability to see how others feel, as she is so materialistic. When the storm takes away her possessions she learns to love her family because she knows that even though she has nothing she still has her family. Tom also overcomes an obstacle. Through Vic’s acceptance of his illness tom comes to terms with it as well and is able to accept it and live happily. The characters in ‘Away’ obviously undergo a change and
