A relationship is a companionship that can lead to happiness. On the other hand it can cause frustration. Realizing a problem and correcting it can help keep a happy relationship. When both people in a relationship work together to overcome a problem then it shows the level of intensity that lies within the relationship. In particular, an analysis of the relationship between a husband and wife from “Cathedral” by Raymond Caver, can quite easily be a great example of a struggling relationship. Within that story, the relationship between the husband and his wife contains struggle, confusion and jealousy. The struggle starts when an old blind man steps in the middle of both the husband and wife. Since the blind man cannot see he connects with the husband’s wife on more of an intimate level. This is when the jealousy begins. The husband does not want to accept the fact that she is further extending herself away from him by attaching to the blind man. His comments seem to aggravate his wife and anger her. The wife had a past marriage to another man who it didn’t work out with. What simply lacks within their relationship is intimate communication and the wife would rather be more intimate with the blind man over he own husband. This is one example of what needs to change between them. The wife and the blind man are very friendly and happy when they are in each other’s presence.
