Aims and Objective (OPTIONAL)
This course is designed as an introduction to advanced English language skills for academic and vocational purposes. It focuses on specific language skills required in conducting an academic research and writing a collaborative research paper. Such skills include locating and screening of relevant background information, skimming and detailed study of related literature, paraphrasing and summarizing, building up of vocabulary and structural repertoire, oral presentation and engagement in discussions on a research project.
In this course, students are encouraged to further apply skills of critical thinking and opinion expression they have learned in General English III. EAPP I prepares students for EAPP II, an advanced study skills course to enhance students in English language communication skills required in further university studies and/or joining the workplace.
Intended Learning Outcomes of the Course
On completion of the course, students should be able to
ILO1. use English accurately, effectively and confidently in various academic and professional settings;
ILO2. write effective introductory, body and concluding paragraphs of an opinion essay;
ILO3. use cohesive devices such as connectives, transitional phrases, repetition and substitution to achieve cohesion in writing;
ILO4. summarize, paraphrase and respond to a given text;
ILO5. provide in-text citations and prepare a work-cited list using the MLA referencing style;
ILO6. conduct secondary research and produce written and oral reports;
ILO7. employ tact in writing negative messages.
Syllabus
This course is an introduction to advanced English language skills for academic and professional purposes. The skills taught in the course include literature search for research, paraphrasing and summarizing, building up a repertoire of vocabulary and structures, oral presentations and engagement in discussions for different academic and professional situations.
More specifically, the course covers the following topics:
1. Vocabulary items and communicative tasks
2. Opinion essay writing
3. Quoting, paraphrasing, summarizing & responding
4. The MLA referencing style
5. Tactful writing
6. Oral presentation skills
