English for Amateurs
English for Amateurs As I look back on my progress as a writer, I noticed major improvements. I have recognized the types of errors I was making at the beginning of the course, and new concepts I have learned. At the first of this semester I had a few problems with writing skills, and it was difficult for me to understand the basic grammar and punctuation that I need to succeed in my college education. It has been over four years since I was enrolled in college, and even longer since I’ve attended any type of English or writing class. So when I decided to get my education back in order, I went to the testing center where I took the (CPT) or the College Placement Test to find out where my education levels stood. I found it very difficult when I got my test results, and saw that my English portion of the test had scored low. This meant that I would have to start with the 0990 class. I had heard the horror stories about the English 0990 class, and how it was for the uneducated and some say “dumb” people. But now that I have taken the 0990 class, it’s nowhere near what I thought it would be. I’m grateful for taking this class and learning the simple steps to prefect my writing skills. Even though I had problems at the beginning of the semester, I began over time to learn many new concepts. When the semester started I figured I could write a paragraph and have no problems, but I was wrong. I had trouble figuring out the rules of commas, where they were supposed to be placed, and why. After a couple paragraph papers of trial and error, I finally had figured out how to place commas in a sentence, especially when I was taught the (FANBOYS) rule. This rule can be used as a coordinating conjunction to unite two complete sentences, thus forming a compound sentence. I think it was the easiest and most helpful part I’ve learned in this class. Now it’s close to the end of the semester and my writing skills have improved. My English papers have continued to progress in

Freshman Composition has done so much for me academically. In previous years I have had to do little to no writing and even when we did there were no rules or writing process we had to follow. This class has built a great basis for me, towards my academic future. I do realize that I am far away from being even an average writer, but I enjoy and accept that challenge to myself on becoming a competent writer. Parts of my writing, that still need to work are my introductions and sentence fluency. While I believe that my strong suits are, that once I get past my obstacles of writing that I have the potential to write something that will make a difference, other than that all my skills are still very raw. I’ve learned many things during EN101, the…

This class has taught me many things about myself along with many necessary skills needed while writing. I know now that, through hard work and determination, I can achieve what I might think to be impossible. While reflecting back on my initial writing abilities, I see the weak, uneducated style of writing. Each essay shows my progression and improvement, and, after a while, the class began to become much easier. Today, after practicing throughout my essays this semester, I believe that I, in fact, have…

My work from the beginning of STEP to now has drastically changed especially in my writing. I never enjoyed writing essays because I did not do well with writing under pressure. After completing my essay, I felt confident about what I produced. However ,when my essay was handed back, it was noted that I lacked vocabulary, figurative language and my sentence structure was poor. After being in class, I have improved on my essay writing skills. I used more vocabulary terms than I usually would in my essays, had better sentence structure, and completed the entire essay with time to spare to check it over. In addition I learned that i have been using seven deadly writing sins in my writing. Continuously writing and having my peers edit my work helped me eliminated those sins from my writing. When school starts again, I will be prepared to write a timed essay with the new skills I have attained.…

During my first semester as a college freshman I have grown a lot not only as a student, but also as a person. At first I thought of myself as a good writer, but throughout the semester I learned that I had a lot of improvements to make in my writing. Already I have made a lot of progress and will continue to improve throughout the rest of the year in core.…

Also I believe that my ability to keep a reader interested in my topic has really improved. An example would be from one of my papers would be "Some people might think that picking out the perfect rod and reel wouldn't be that hard and they are all basically the same right? WRONG!" I think that just adding the word WRONG in all capital letters helps to keep the reader entertained and wanting to keep reading (The Perfect). Writing papers that do not interest me are definitely a whole lot harder for me to write and this shows in my writing because it will not flow very well and it looks like I was just throwing bits and pieces together to make it work. Whenever I am able to write about a topic that interests me the whole paper will be an incredibly higher quality than one that does not interest me. In the observing essay that I wrote the context of the paper flows very nicely and there was not much criticism at all because it was a well written paper…

This semester in English 101 has been very demanding for me. In previous years, I generally completed my writing assignments with ease and without having to put much thought or effort into them, but this year, I was required to work for many hours on each of my papers and to proofread them many times in order to receive a good grade. For example, I learned that if I wanted to reach my audience, I had to organize my paper in such a way that everyone could easily understand the organization and the logic behind my ideas. Furthermore, for the first time in my high school career, I welcomed and appreciated the feedback of my peers as a tool that could help with the drafting of my academic papers. I chose to examine three articles from my portfolio…

As the fall 2013 semester comes to a close, it is time reflect on my experience that I had in completing English 049. Having taken the English placement test many years ago, and scored well enough for English 101 honors, I felt confident that I would once again be placed in at least in English 101. My self-assessment and over confidence was proven to be incorrect this time I took the placement test. At first, I felt disappointed in the fact that I thought that I would have scored better than I had. Now as I reflect on the experience, I am certainly pleased with the experience having taken the 049 class in lieu of 101 at this juncture in my education. The placement test proved that I needed a review of the basics and…

After reflecting on the last semester, I realize how much I have grown as a writer. I still have a long way to go, but I have certainly improved. Since Mr. Frigo allowed us to choose our topic for each essay I was always able to write about something that interests me. That also allowed me to focus more on the process of writing than the content. With a better understanding of the five-step writing process I will be able to endure College Writing II.…

At the start of the semester, I considered myself a good writer. I had done well in composition my sophomore year and believed that I didn’t have much more I needed to learn. However, coming into Advanced Composition, I realized quite quickly that my writing was not all I had thought it was. Compared to what Mrs. Witt was expecting, my writing was very juvenile. After the first paper, I was able to see what exactly I needed to work on, such as tying topics back to my thesis and working on writing a clear thesis. As the semester progressed, I started to improve on these things and in turn improve on my writing in general. Now, at the end of the semester I can say that I am a better writer than I was at the beginning. I am in no way an expert at writing but I at least have a better understanding on how to make a paper sound more educated and well written.…

Coming into this class I was aware that my writing abilities were not the most resilient. I attempted this class my senior year in high school, but due to lack of motivation and laziness I received a D for the class. Seeing that I needed to retake a class that was not particularly my most successful topic pushed me to achieve success. I established a goal, to pass the class with at least a B, and I am only one more paper away from doing that. I’m writing this letter to tell you how my writing has changed for the better over the semester, and the obstacles that I had to overcome.…

To see a more enhanced improvement of my writing, I could have used other resources outside of this course. One resource I was aware of and had available to me, but I did not utilize, was East Carolina University’s Online Writing Lab. I feel like I have been challenged in the writing area. I am learning new skills and being pushed as a writer. For example I have learned how to properly insert quotes and cite them in essays. This semester has not been hard for me but it has also not been easy. I feel this has been very good and I’m learning at a good pace and level. I am very satisfied with my experiences in this class as a writer.
