Beowulf is another example of an old English story that describes a near perfect hero, supernatural elements, and an evil enemy and so on. The story of Beowulf begins with Hrothgar, king of the Danes, whose mead hall is being terrorized by a monster every night so much so that they close the hall down. After so many years Beowulf, a hero of the Geats, ventures forth on this quest to help. Beowulf slays the evil enemies before returning home and slaying one final enemy before his…

I recently re-watched Oprah Winfrey’s made for TV movie adaptation of Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God, and was very disappointed. I admire Ms. Winfrey immensely because of her inspirational rise to fame due to her persistent pursuit of excellence and because of her desire to leave something positive for the world, so I hesitate to be critical of her pet project. However, her version of this most profound and uplifting novel fell short of capturing Ms. Hurston’s excellence.…

    Archetypes In The Odyssey

According to literary theorist Joseph Campbell, an archetypal or mythological hero is one who "...sets forth from his commonday hut or castle and is lured, carried away, or else voluntarily proceeds, to the threshold of adventure. Beyond the threshold, then, the hero journeys through a world of unfamiliar yet strangely intimate forces, some of which severely threaten him (tests), some of which give magical aid (helpers). When he arrives at the nadir of the mythological round, he undergoes a supreme ordeal and gains his reward. The triumph may be represented as the hero’s sexual union with the goddess-mother of the world (sacred marriage), his recognition by the father-creator (father atonement), his own divinization (apotheosis), or again – if the powers have remained unfriendly to him – his theft of the boon he came to gain (bride-theft, fire-theft); intrinsically it is an expansion of consciousness and therewith of being (illumination, transfiguration, freedom). The final work is that of the return. If the powers have blessed the hero, he now sets forth under their protection (emissary); if not, he flees and is pursued (transformation flight, obstacle flight). At the return threshold the transcendental powers must remain behind; the hero re-emerges from the kingdom of dread (return, resurrection). The boon that he brings restores the world…

The ancient world literature is filled with epic tales of heroes and gods who go on perilous adventures to foreign lands and encounter many mythical beings along the way. The Iliad, the Odyssey, and the Aeneid are all similar epics in their adventures and their lessons. Throughout the literary works of the ancient world there are many reoccurring motifs such as: the role of the gods, the role of suffering, and the roll of fate.…

Americans strongly affirm the principles of religious freedom, religious tolerance, and separation of church and state. Nearly 9-in-10 (88 percent) Americans agree that America was founded on the idea of religious freedom for everyone, including religious groups that are unpopular. Ninety-five percent of Americans agree that all religious books should be treated with respect even if we don’t share the religious beliefs of those who use them. Nearly two-thirds (66 percent) of Americans agree that we must maintain a strict separation of church and state. Americans’ views of Muslims and Islam are mixed, however. As with other previously marginalized religious groups in U.S. history, Americans are grappling with the questions Islam poses to America’s founding principles and way of life.…

Only a handful of men and women are remembered throughout history. Many of these people are remembered because they achieved glory. In Beowulf, translated by Seamus Heaney, one of the major themes relates to the search for glory. Beowulf, the protagonist, protects his nation and its allies from foes, earns the respect of others, and takes actions to ensure the well being of the society. Combined, these traits form the heroic code. Beowulf lives his life by the heroic code in search of glory for him and his nation.…
