Chapter 1 - Scientific Methods
Objectives
1. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of classroom/science safety.
2. Understand the purpose of a hypothesis, and identify when a hypothesis should be used.
3. Be able to identify the independent and dependent variables in a formalized hypothesis.
4. Differentiate between an observation and an inference.
5. Contrast quantitative and qualitative observations.
6. Given a data table, draw and label a graph. Including a title, labeled units, and legend.
7. Given a graph, describe the relationship between the dependent and independent variables.
8. Identify the basic metric units of length, mass, volume and temperature, and list the common prefixes of the metric system.
9. Describe the tools used to make metric measurements.
10. Be able to convert from one metric unit to another.

Objectives:
1. Identify the 3 subatomic particles, and state the locations and charges of each.
2. Use the periodic table to determine the numbers of protons, neutrons and electrons in an atom.
3. Define the term isotope and describe how the isotopes of an element are similar and how they are different.
4. Identify the subatomic particle involved in chemical bonding, and describe the two main types of bonds.
5. Be able to construct/draw a Bohr model of an atom and an ion.
6. Contrast an ion with an atom.
7. Describe how the structure of water, including its polarity, contributes to its unique properties.
8. State the ions that are involved in the formation of acids and bases.
9. Explain where acids, bases, and neutral compounds are found on the pH scale.
10. Describe the importance of a cell’s ability to buffer solutions against rapid changes in pH.
11. Name the elements that carbon bonds with to make up life’s molecules
