In the opening lines of “My Last Duchess”, Browning introduces his speaker, the Duke of Ferrara, who sets the stage to tell the story of his late wife to the Count’s emissary. As a dramatic monologue, Browning’s identity is dissolved into his character’s voice and persona; the first-person narration of the Duke dominates the perspective of the story; the emissary becomes a silent listener, whose presence is only known because he is addressed as “you” and “Sir” by the speaker throughout the poem. The relationship between the speaker and the listener within the narrative thus sets up an analogous relationship between the poet, Browning, and his audience outside of the narrative. Like the emissary, we are silent; however, unlike him, as readers, we are made aware of the fact that the Duke is to be distinguished from the poet as a fictional creation, and that in turn, we are to distinguish ourselves from the listener’s silent presence; we are not the “you” to whom the narrative is being directed. The implicit theatricality of the narrative is emphasised through Browning’s inclusion of the word, “FERRARA” before the poem begins. The script-like nature of the monologue removes Browning from his narration, and thus distances us from its reception; the actual story of the Duchess is located within the Duke’s inner narrative, and the story of the Duke’s external narrative is located within Browning’s poem.…

Through “My Last Duchess”, Browning exposes the innermost characteristics of the Duke of Ferrara. The Duke is the speaker of the poem and is hashing out the details of another marriage with an emissary from a Count when he draws a curtain to reveal a magnificent fresco of the Duke’s Last Duchess. The emissary voices a question about the expression on her face, an “earnest glance” of “depth and passion” (line 8), prompting the Duke’s monologue. Looking upon the artwork, the Duke praises “Fra Pandolf’s hands” which worked “busily a day” (lines 3-4) to create the masterpiece. This poem is loosely based on historical events involving Alfonso, the Duke of Ferrara, who lived in the 16th century. The Duke is the speaker of the poem, and tells us he is entertaining an emissary who has come to negotiate the Duke’s marriage (he has recently been widowed) to the daughter of another powerful family. As he shows the visitor through his palace, he stops before a portrait of the late Duchess, apparently a young and lovely girl. The Duke begins reminiscing about the portrait sessions, then about the Duchess herself. His musings give way to a diatribe on her disgraceful behavior: he claims she flirted with everyone and did not appreciate his “gift of a nine-hundred-years- old name.” As his monologue continues, the reader realizes with ever-more chilling certainty that the Duke in fact caused the Duchess’s early demise: when her behavior escalated, “[he] gave commands; / Then all smiles stopped together.” Having made this disclosure, the Duke returns to the business at hand: arranging for another marriage, with another young girl. As the Duke and the emissary walk leave the painting behind, the Duke points out other notable artworks in his collection.…

The poem “my last duchess” by Robert browning, a 19th century English poet, is based on historic events in 15th century Ferrara (contemporary Italy). The speaker, is actually Alfonso the 2nd, who entertains in his house his future wife’s, from Tyrol (current Austria), negotiator (the servant). Alfonso married his late wife, Lucrezia from the Medici family, when she was only 14 years old. Unlike him, whose noble family origins dates back a centuries (“as if she ranked my gift of a nine hundred years old name”), the family of his former young wife just began to rise to power. Apparently, Lucrezia was a cheerful girl who loved the life (“she had a heart, how shell I say too soon may glad”). This caused quite dissatisfaction for the Ferrara duke, whose jealousy caused him commanding to cease that behavior (“I gave commands, Then all smiles stopped together”). His orders might shed some light over the suspicious, anyway, circumstances of Lucrezia’s death. During their meeting, the duchess shows his guest his house along with his art collection, while continues to inform him about his late wife (“There she stands as if alive. Will’t please you rise? We’ll meet the company below”). Those transitions can indicate the psychiatric unstable character of the duchess, which will be discussed later as a possible reason to hurt her, and speak so openly about it. And yet, remains the question: what is the duchess’s purpose of telling that strange and chilling story, which not necessary indicating the straight responsibility of the duke to his wife death, but certainly draws many question marks about his deeds?
