The importance of being Earnest, Film and book Comparison
The importance of being Earnest is a play by Oscar Wild. The play was premiered on February 14 1895, it was the last play written by Oscar Wilde, and the film was later on premiered in 2002. The genre of it is being Romantic comedy. The way in which the book was portrayed from the structure of the film was different from that of the play.
The film starts off with Algernon being chased by the police for not paying his debts it gives a clue of the type of person Algernon could be, then later on he is at his mansion playing the piano and talking to his servant. The book portrays Algernon as a rich man with no problems whatsoever at the beginning but the film says something different. Algernon is with Lane his servant in the book and in the film their conversation is exactly the same as in the book, making it really easy to understand. An example could be of when he was talking to lane his servant in the first act. ” Did you hear what I was playing, Lane?” he asked lane his servant. “I didn't think it polite to listen, sir.” Lane humbly replied. The film gives us a better picture if the type of person Algernon is when his chased by the cops over his debts. Even though scenes are cut out from the book, it doesn’t confuse the audience too much.
Lady Bracknell’s conversation with Jack about the engagement was interesting in both the film and the book, I would’ve thought Lady Bracknell would smile about the things she liked about Jack but she kept a straight face, they were other people in the room and that was not mentioned in the book at all. Lady Bracknell’s interview with Earnest was interesting an example could be of when she asked earnest how much he earned and about how much he knows. “Which do you know?”She asked Earnest, and he replied by saying “I know nothing” she was pleases with his answer as she responded with “I am pleased to
