English Poem Essay
In this essay I will be comparing the poems ‘The Charge Of The light Brigade’ By Alfred Lord Tennyson and ‘Dulce et Decorum Est’ By Wilfred Owen. I will be evaluating the points of the language, emotions, the subject and the purpose of both of the poems. I will contrast both and then conclude what poem I believe presents a better picture of war to the reader. Poem 1 will be The Charge Of The light Brigade and poem 2 will be Dulce et Decorum Est.
First off I shall talk about the purpose of the poems. Poem 1’s purpose, in my opinion, is to simply show respect for the soldiers who fought, and evidently died in the charge of the light brigade. I think this because of when the text says “Noble Six Hundred!” It is possible, but unlikely that Poem 2 also shows respect. But if this is the case, it is heavily out shadowed by the way it feels like it shows how much Owen hates war and how untruthful and wrong it is. I get this message from when the text reads “The old lie ‘Dulce et decorum est Pro patria mori.’” This means that it is right and sweet to die for ones country.
Next I will talk to you about the mood of the poems. Poem 1’s mood starts of quite darkly; for example “The valley of Death.” This leads the reader to believe that the poem will be gruesome and dark. Yet overall you feel the pride that radiates from the poem. Now moving on over to Owen’s poem, it starts sullen and horrifying, “Bent double, like old beggars under sacks.” Yet unlike Tennyson the despair-like mood continues and it mood portrays that of hate and fear.
Now, onto the subject of the poems. Poem 1 is based solely around the Light Brigade, and doesn’t drift away from the charge they did and how heroic they are, whereas Poem 2 goes over multiple aspects of war and what they do to people. Poem 2 ranges from gas, to old Latin phrases and trenches. This is to be expected as Poem 2 is much longer than Poem 1.
Finally, I will be going over the language that is used in the two poems. The language used in Poem 1 is rather simplistic in comparison to Poem 2. The reason behind this is that the words it used are quite modern and not as advanced as you would think. It doesn’t go into much depth with the language and it is quite light-hearted despite the fact people die. This is the polar opposite to Poem 2. Poem 2 uses olden words that aren’t frequently used now days such as ‘Cud’ and ‘Ardent’. Also the language is darker and more powerful. A rather good example of this is the sentence “Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs.” This entices the reader and excites them as the vocabulary used throughout is always strong and at times can be heart wrenching.
Now, time for the conclusion. Looking at over the multiple and valid reasons and points above, my conclusion is that Poem 2 is multitudes better at portraying actual war to the reader. Although Poem 1 is all in all a very good poem, it just doesn’t make me think of all the hardships of war, and simply Poem 2 presents the harsh reality that comes with war. Also, it helps that Owen was actually a soldier in a war whereas Tennyson wasn’t.

In Wilfred Owen’s poem, “Dulce et Decorum Est” he reveals an authentic view of war drawing from his personal experiences. This poem details the horrors of war through the eyes of a soldier painting a vivid image of these miserable beings stripped of their humanity. Readers can envision the sleep-deprived and contorted figures of the soldiers as they lose all of their senses trudging along the engulfing sludge. Owen also details the surroundings meticulously. Gas shells are dropping behind the troops as they are disoriented in the “dim… misty panes and thick green light”. Even after this battle occurs, Owen is haunted by the scenes he witnessed in the war. Owen recalls his dreams of seeing a helpless man plunging towards him as he is writhing in pain with blood gargling from his lungs. The final line of the poem “Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori” translates to it is sweet and glorious to die for one’s country. At the underlying meaning, this poem tackles the issue of honor and…

‘Dulce et Decorum Est’ by Wilfred Owen and ‘The Soldier’ by Rupert Brooke are poems about war which treat their subjects differently. Both poems are examples of the authors’ perceptions of war; Owen’s being about its bitter reality and Brooke’s about the glory of dying for one’s country. The poets express their sentiments on the subject matter in terms of language, tone, rhyme, rhythm and structure. ‘Dulce et Decorum Est’ has very effective language by using diverse methods such as alliteration, onomatopoeia and diction. The tone is unyielding and vivid imagery is used to reinforce it, primarily by means of compelling metaphors and enduring similes. The rhyme scheme is regular with very little change and helps establish the rhythm. The poem is divided into four stanzas, the first two of which set and develop the scene, while the third and fourth convey the abiding memory and offer a commentary on what has preceded. ‘The Soldier’ is a Petrarchan sonnet divided into two stanzas. The initial octave lays out Brooke’s thoughts and feelings regarding his subject, with the sestet offering a definitive final comment. The tone along with the rhyme is very regular, helping to convey the poet’s attitude. It has a continually lilting rhythm which reinforces the latter.…

Both poets use imagery in order for their thoughts and feelings to be portrayed; this shows what the leaders did to the soldiers during the war. In The Charge of the Light Brigade Alfred Tennyson personifies death and hell into some sort of monsters that the soldiers can’t escape from because they had ‘jaws of death’ and a ‘mouth of hell’. This shows the reader that the soldiers were seen as not having a chance from the very start and that maybe they were pushed into serving for their country by their s called leaders because they felt as though they needed to do what they thought was right when really it wasn’t right at all. Both the words ‘death’ and ‘hell’ bring emotions to the readers that are unnatural and not expected, it shows us that the poet wanted the reader to see what war does to a person and that the only option is death which shows that not much thought goes into how loved one and families will cope after the tragedy’s because the leaders failed to think about anybody else but them concluding in them putting their selves before others letting them get hurt. we also see that Alfred Tennyson wanted to show the reader what these heroes went through and what they had to suffered each and everyday due to their leaders telling them to go forward and fight, he does this by describing how…

In Emily Dickinson's poem "I Felt a Funeral in My Brain", Dickinson describes what seems to be a funeral in her mind. When one thinks of a funeral, they usually think of a ceremony for a person who has died. This funeral that Dickinson is experiencing in her brain, is actually a funeral for the death of her mind. Emily Dickinson describes events that usually take place at a funeral but the ideas she pitches to the reader doesn't exactly exemplify your ideal funeral. She tells the reader how there are mourners, a service, lifting of a box implying it is a coffin and nobody is being burried. In Emily Dickenson's poem, the reader can elaborate upon elements of poetry such as imagery, symbolism, diction, and metaphor that create a better sense of understanding.…

Ok what I have got here today is a detailed speech and I intend to explain two poems “Disabled” and “Dolce et Decorum est.”, both written by Wilfred Owen. I would choose these two poems to be in an anthology because I found the poems to be very dramatic and extremely detailed. Owen intends to shock us by demonstrating what a soldier might expect in a situation between life and death. He is not afraid to show his own feelings. Wilfred Owen is an anti-war poet and expresses his ideas and feelings through various themes and poetic devices which I will be discussing throughout this speech.…

Wilfred Owen successfully creates the truthful and terrifying image of war within his poems. The loss, sacrifice, urgency and pity of war are shown within the themes of his poetry and the use of strong figurative language; sensory imagery and tone contribute to the reader. This enables the reader to appreciate Owen’s comments about the hopelessness of war and the sacrifice the men around him went through within his poems, ‘Dulce et Decorum Est.’ and ‘Futility’.…

Analyzing these poems, you can easily come to a conclusion that authors are in a conflict with the outer world. But the nature and the roots of the conflict differ each author and each poem has its own story of the war against the universe and the story of the pain, caused to him or to her by this world. Thus, talking about each poem, in particular, we notice the more than specific and purely pessimistic way of the all the author's way of expression. Nevertheless, we, also, pay attention to the each author writing manner. These manners can be explained by three main factors. By revenge, by a crush of the world and by the main hero death.…

The Reproduction of Profiles by Rosmarie Waldrop and The Chinese Notebook by Ron Silliman are developing ideas of experimental language poetry, a controversial movement in American poetry from the 1970s to the present. Language poetry concentrate on non-narrative forms, a role of the language that creates a meaning of a poem and non-traditional way to interact with a text and read it. The reader becomes an important part of the poem because poets play with a presence of the narrator in the poem, making an illusion that the speaker is vanishing through the text and the language starts to speak for itself.…
