FOREWORD
The object of this book is to give a course of English grammar for students specializing in the English language.
The book includes Accidence, i. e. the parts of speech and morphological categories, and Syntax, i. e. the sentence and the parts of the sentence. The rules are illustrated by examples taken from English and American authors of the 19th and 20th centuries.
The material of the book has been used for many years in teaching stu-dents of the Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages in Leningrad, and has thus been put to the test of practical work. In preparing the material for print the authors have considerably enlarged it.
Exercises on all topics treated in the manual are published in a separate issue, arranged in accordance with the chapters of the" present book.
The authors wish to acknowledge their obligations to the teachers of the Department of Foreign Languages and the Philological Department of Lenin-grad University, as well as to the teachers of the Hertzen Pedagogical Insti-tute and all the strangers, who have reviewed the book and made a number of valuable suggestions.

The course paper is devoted to functioning of concept "Language difficulties" in the theory of language norm in lexicography. Since 50th of XX century began the mass edition of practical manuals, short dictionaries, reference books and popular scientific editions concentrated on private and general problems of the language norms. By now there are more than 100 orthological dictionaries, and almost half of them have such problems as “language difficulties”. Though, that is an obvious thing that all these editions give coverage to problems of language norms, in scientific and methodological linguistic publications dedicated to problems of language normalization and codification and language norm variation, the item “language difficulties” are not discussed at all. Furthermore, in introductorial articles of these dictionaries authors always avoid of using such words as “difficulties”, “difficult” (sometimes they substitute them with term “complex”) and don’t give detailed interpretation of these difficulties or problems.…

Life has changed. Political, national and economic considerations are closely interlaced with each other but they all influence the status of teaching English at this or that particular time. Economic considerations for teaching and learning English are more than considerations: they are imperatives. Globalization makes our planet a smaller place, integrating financial, information and trading systems, and the role of English in the process of modernization, science and technology is significant. Perestroika reached behind the secure barricade of the university walls, and brought new challenges. It reached all the institutions teaching English, and challenged the existing standards of language competence. The effectiveness of student’s performance (показатели знаний), which used to be viewed in terms of linguistic effectiveness (grammar, vocabulary, phonetics) acquired new dimensions of para-linguistic (body language, facial expressions – мимика, выражение лица) and extra-linguistic competence (cultural awareness). The bottom line (практический результат) of this competence is the effective usage of English for communication purposes in the future careers of students: thus performance objectives (цели обучения с точки зрения результатов) replaced purely educational objectives, or learning the language for its own sake. Tо provide the students with this competence teachers had to familiarize themselves with real-life situations and new relevant areas of knowledge which might require the knowledge of English on the part of our students. Innovative (новаторский, передовой) teachers had to acquire computer and business correspondence skills, to learn about negotiations and reports, and study the subject matter of customer service, business ethics and international business culture. Our audiences changed too: workers and engineers on the oil rigs (нефтевышки), accountants of…

The theme of the research paper is “English borrowings”. This theme arouses my interest as it’s widely discussed in all scientific circles. New languages are born, some die out, and lots of them mix up with each other. These facts have a great influence on the humanity. Nowadays the language that influences Russian the most is English. English has become an international language and is used all over the world. More and more people, both youth and grown ups, use this words in their speech. These words are used in all sorts of activities: politics, fashion, trade, medicine, law, military, mass media, sports.…

    Functional-Notional Approach

Suggestopedia, one of the strangest “humanistic approaches” was developed in the 1970’s by the Bulgarian educator Georgi Lozanov. It is based on the idea that people, as they get older, inhibit their learning to conform to the social norms and in order to reactivate the capabilities they used as children, teachers have to use the power of suggestion. The suggestopedic approach is said to increase enormously the ability of students to learn, to remember, and to integrate what they learn into their personality. This paper presents the sequences of a suggestopedic session, the role of the teacher and opposite points of view regarding the use of the approach. The conclusion is that, despite a lot of inconveniences, suggestopedia has elements that can be used successfully with all sorts of learners, some of these elements being employed by the teachers and professors at the Foreign Language Centre and at the Land Forces Academy.…
