I am choosing adduction as the topic for this summative project because I have done research on this issue and how it can lead to people being homeless.
I already have some knowledge on alcoholism from a previous project that I did in
ENG3C for the novel shattered. Shattered is a story about a Sergeant named Jack who has a drinking problem and is homeless. Jack reminds me a lot of Rex Walls from the novel The Glass Castle that I recently read in ENG4C. Both Jack and Rex
Walls are examples of how intelligent educated people can have an addiction to alcohol that leads to being homeless. After reading both the novels and doing some research, I now have a different perspective on homeless people and alcoholism.
Part 2 - Personal Essay
One of the main addictions people face today is the addiction to alcohol.
Unlike drugs, alcohol is a legal substance for adults over 19 to get their hands on.
The use of alcohol even in relatively small amounts can have very serious consequences. Alcohol consumption can cause major health problems and can also impair an individual to make rational decisions , an example is drunk driving.
Alcohol is also a factor in crimes involving violence.
From reading the novels The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls and Shattered by Eric Walters, I saw how alcoholism can lead to being homeless and the effect it has on family. Sergeant Jack from the novel Shattered and Rex Walls from the novel The Glass Castle have many things in common. Both men are highly intelligent with great personalities but their lives are ruined due to their addiction to alcohol. When sober Rex Walls is an amazing father that cared for his children and taught his kids physics, Morse code and so much more! However, when he drinks he starts to get violent and threatens anyone that gets in his way. Both Rex walls and Sargent Jack are aware that their addiction is harming them and the people in their lives but its still not a good enough
