In the introduction to section 5 of Convergences, entitled “Dividing Lines,” Robert Atwan discusses the adversarial model of American cultural conversations. The sides are identified with labels like conservative/liberal, Republican/Democrat, white/black, and religious/secular. These labels sometimes simplify complicated issues and prevent us from reaching a compromise, but these types of arguments and debates are also used to determine how power is distributed and problems solved in our communities. While we may not have the individual power needed to solve a community dilemma, we do have the power to write and argue and convince others of our views in an attempt to solve these problems. In this assignment you will argue about one of the issues from Convergences. You may argue against or in conjunction with the texts. Identify an issue about which you want to argue, use two texts from the book and one outside source of any type (book, article, website, documentary, etc), and argue for a particular view and/or resolution of the issue.…

Writing 121, English Composition, teaches you college-level writing skills, the kind you will need for essay assignments, term papers, and exams, as well as perhaps your own further explorations into your writing talents. We’ll read, identify and write the four classic forms of essays, also called “modes of discourse” — e.g., expository, descriptive, narrative, and argumentative (traditionally nicknamed EDNA). Most importantly, though, we’ll study and practice the writing process, how to select and narrow a topic, how to generate and organize ideas, and how to revise drafts.…

Words are a complex element in life to define, but the best way to explain it is “words are labels for what we know” (Cleary and Linn, 577). As individuals learn words, they are not only growing their vocabulary, but also extending their overall knowledge at the same time. What is the most efficient way for one to extend his or her vocabulary and fully understand the meaning of different words? People tend to believe that knowing the definition is all that an individual needs to know about a word. There is so much more than just knowing the definition in order for someone to incorporate a word into his or her everyday communication. Teachers tend to make the mistake in just having their students memorize a definition of a word instead of having them understand the word in its context. According to the…
