Enrique's Journey Chapter Summaries
In chapters 7 and 8 in Enrique’s Journey, Enrique has finally made it to America. He is now living in the same house as his mother and has found a job in North Carolina. During this chapter I also found a few more key points that made me start to think about different aspect about coming to a new country. The first key point in the chapters with Enrique and his mother dealing with their kind of rocky relationship. Their relations begins well and then it begins to go up and down, almost like a rollercoaster. I know that Enrique is so excited to finally see his mother, but I would assume that there is a ton of resentment built up from the many years with out her. He was forced to grow up with out her and I think that it is personally fine for his to have at least a little resentment for her leaving him. Although I also see his mother’s side of this as well. She left to make sure she had a better life and thought this would help his life. She feels she made the right decision, and at the time she probably did, but she did leave her son. He needed her and now when he has finally found her, she …show more content…
I know that this was the hardest decision she probably ever had to make. She was so in love with her daughter, and they had such a close bond, I have no idea how she was able to leave her behind. If I were her, I think I would had have to come up with a way, so both my daughter and I could travel to America. Honestly, I would have tried to find a legal way, so my daughter and I would have a safer life in a country legally. Now I know that in the lower income countries, it is harder to come to America legally, but I know it can be done. I would have rather had safety and be able to live in America as an American one day, so my daughter could have a better life, and my grandchildren and great grandchildren, can continue to have a wonderful life in

Juan Ponce de León y Figueroa (1474 – July 1521) was a Spanish explorer. He became the first Governor of Puerto Rico by appointment of the Spanish crown. He led the first European expedition to Florida, which he named. He is associated with the legend of the Fountain of Youth, reputed to be in Florida. He was born in the village of Santervás de Campos in the northern part of what is now the Spanish province of Valladolid. Although early historians placed his birth in 1460, more recent evidence shows he was likely born in 1474. His family genealogy is extremely confusing and poorly documented. There is no consensus on who his parents were but it seems that he was a member of a distinguished and influential noble family. His relatives included Rodrigo Ponce de León, the Marquess of Cádiz and a celebrated figure in the Moorish wars.…

The only thing that is keeping Lourdes from giving up is the fantasy of being whole, happy, and well off with all of her children by her side. This fantasy will soon shatter when Lourdes and Enrique are finally united, and she can see how the decision she made to leave many years ago to find prosperity has played out in reality. Overall, the family unit itself was broken, and this is one of Nazario 's overall points. Enrique continues to enable his broken family when he asks Maria Isabel to join him, risking starting the same cycle of abandonment with his own daughter, suggesting that these decisions are not easily criticized, but rather must be considered as one of many factors at risk in the immigration debate. Nazario explains, “How some children grow into restless adults, who are never able to forgive their parent(s) for leaving them. Others, like Enrique, try to overlook the past and move toward a brighter future; however, their lives are often marked by addiction or other coping methods.” (Nazario,2013). “The true irony is the fact that the mothers originally left their country and children to help keep their family intact.” (Nazario, 2013). At the time little did they realize the…

I am reading Enrique's Journey. The major obstacle Enrique is facing is his mother left him to go work in america. This leads to his other main obstacles. Lack of love and abandonment/rejection. Those around him don't care enouf for him and seam to just not want him around. So they reject and/or abandon him. He doesn't feel loved and that causes all of his self inflicted problems in…

Monzer Omar’s journey from his hometown in Syria to Germany is an intriguing story that highlights the significant difference between absolute and relative distance. The 2300-mile journey that would have taken about 40 hours by car or 3.5 hours by airplane took him “25 days” to complete (NPR). These statistics can be calculated using absolute distances and average speeds of the vehicle used for means of travel. However, they only illustrate to us the absolute distance - that is - it lacks any context of the situation. In other words, it lacks the human element, of human geography. Monzer did not make this trip leisurely; he saw an intervening opportunity to migrate to Europe, as his country was becoming inhabitable to live and raise a family.…

Sonia Nazario perused the role of immigration throughout Enrique’s Journey. “Virtually unnoticed, he will become one of an estimated 48,000 children who enter the United States from Central America and Mexico each year, illegally and without either of their parents.” (Enrique’s Journey). This sentence from the story shows that it is thousands of immigrants just like Enrique out searching for their mother. They all take risks regardless of what the…

    Andre's Mother

These few sentences enable the reader to see what kind of person Andre's Mother was: homophobic, oblivious of her child's behaviors, and narrow-minded. As Cal compares her to the mother in the comic strip Little Lulu, he inadvertently calls her remote and formidable. Lulu's mother was so detached that nobody cared to know her name, and was simply referred to as Lulu's Mother, another way that Cal furthered the comparison. These descriptions fit her well as she knows nothing of her son's true self and struck fear in him, not allowing him to let his own mother inside the world that Cal and his family knew so well. Cal lets Andre's Mother know that her behaviors did not go unnoticed; when Andre was down he would ask him what the matter was, getting the response of "Just a little homesick, Cal, just a little bit" (1994). She instilled such angst in her own son that no matter how much he missed her, he wasn't able to face her.…

I discovered that her story was very relatable, because I grew up hearing my parents stories about leaving their families at such young ages and moving across country for a fresh start in the States. At 14 years old, Diane Guerrero, was left utterly alone. She stated angrily, “When the authorities made the choice to detain my parents, they did not even bother to check that a young girl, a minor, was just without a family”(43). The immigration officers did not care about Diane, in fact, they never contacted her to find out if she had a house to stay in, now that she was homeless and parentless. Luckily, a few close family friends took her in, but she went bouncing from home to home for the next 4 years, hardly ever talking, let alone seeing her parents. She could have gone back to Colombia and let go of any and all opportunities, shockingly, she chose to stay here and take advantage of her citizenship. Hopeful, she said, “College gave me a shot at a future” (141). Diane was aware that college was her way to get a future and “maybe even bring my parents back” (145) I think, that’s a valid example of why people want to live in this country.…

He had a reason. Fare Ahmedi didn’t just cross the border from Afghanistan to Pakistan to risk getting in trouble for nothing. Buck from the Call of The Wild didn’t just survive in the wild after living in a house all his life. He had a reason.…
