Enterprise Technologies and the Value Chain
Enterprise technologies play many roles in supporting the value chain. They can be used in the supply chain to enable businesses to communicate and share information with the vendors and suppliers in order ensure they are able to meet demand. They also allow companies to gather and maintain data about their customers to help inform decisions important to management of the demand chain. Unlike the way information was considered to be proprietary two decades ago, businesses within industries now leverage technology by collaborating with competitors to reduce costs. (Walters & Rainbird, 2007). Enterprise technology helps facilitate these and a myriad of other value chain enhancing activities.
Enterprise Technology
Companies use a wide variety of applications to collect and process key data that is important to the successful operation of the business. It is often necessary to break data down into specific parts to then share it with unique departments within the company. At times this can require data to be copied or separated from one application to another in order to support consistent functioning of the value chain. Currently, these types of processes are becoming outdated, as companies find that a process like this “lacks visibility, hides supply chain risk, and inhibits quick reaction to unexpected supply chain events.” (Oracle, 2012).
An example of this can be found in many companies, where different systems are used to support different aspects of the business. In the sales division, Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software is used to track customer information, keep a record of the companies interactions with customers, and place and track orders.
