Over the summer I hosted a fundraising event for a program targeting the girl child in a local community. This event involved the selling of traditional dishes at a local supermarket and was detailed down to the number. The program was aimed at developing literacy levels among girls. The fundraiser was not limited to the selling of traditional details but also collecting resources such as books, pens, pencils and other stationaries that would be useful. The event was advertised a month in advance, I had printed out fliers and opted for what is the most effective advertising method today which is social media. Word of mouth was another key strategy at this, then the necessary materials to decorate the place and prepare the food was brought together through donations. I organised a committee of women from the community who cooked the food that was displayed and replenished through out the day. The poor turnout at the beginning of the event caused some weariness until this changed as the day progressed. The event was very successful and more than anything else had raised enough resources for the girls. Additionally, it gained the program new supporters who committed to monthly payments towards the cause. This skill has been developed in both formal and non-formal settings. The formal settings include academically through assignments, presentations, interactions with colleagues and lecturers and modules in foundation and first year dedicated to developing communication skills to a professional level. After my internship with FNB this summer, I was given feedback by my team leader on the improvements made in my communication skills. He mentioned that when I had joined in I was timid and shied away from making inputs in the meets held to share and discuss the action plan of the week, share key information to take note of during the week and gather suggestions on possible improvements of operations. As the weeks progressed I was able to add on to the information brought to the table and critique anything I felt could be improved upon without choking on my words as I had before. In one incident I remember proposing during the meeting a new approach to a niche of clients based on an encounter I had with one earlier.
