“The construct of entitlement has been studied primarily in psychotherapy (Bishop & Lane, 2002). Many psychotherapy patients believed they were special”. (Beutler & Gudmunson, 2012, p. 20) Entitlement felt in adolescents feel little responsibility for how they spend their parent’s money. On the other hand, the study of conscientiousness was based around a few previous research studies. The study of Costa and McCrae had findings of conscientiousness being related to emotional intelligence and impulse control, Stanley and Danko discovered common characteristics of wealthy Americans are similar to the profile of a financially conscientious person and Webley and Nyhus suggested conscientiousness as a broad personality trait. (Beutler & Gudmunson, 2012)Beutler and Clinton literature review helped build the foundation of their research by developing a good hypothesis. Literature review helps identify previous findings, contradicts to your hypotheses, opinions and potential problems the researcher might run into. Beutler and Clinton supports their hypothesis by concluding that entitlement and conscientiousness are indeed two new money-attitude scales, “the scales can be sued as standardized instruments in assessing adolescent money attitudes and offer an attitudinal dimension to the development of materialism and voluntary simplicity as consumer values”. (Beutler & Gudmunson, 2012, p. 27) Beutler and Clinton’s research intrigued me; it can very well be applied to today’s society. They accurately identified all steps within their research; however, testing methods could be identified by stating what method they were using. Overall, I find the research to be significant; Beutler and Clinton properly demonstrated the correlation between entitlement and conscientiousness on the money attitude
