“The absence of full-service markets and the even more limited food choices available in low-income communities have emerged as crucial food justice issues” (Gottlieb, Joshi). Thus, it is not by accident that communities of color and low-income communities lack the access to full-services markets. There is a beneficiary motivation by corporations and the government who plan to extract and benefit from communities of color at the cost of their health and human rights. I have hard the term environmental racism before; though I don’t know the academic word for word definition of it, I sure understand the concept of the term and what it stands for. One example I would like to use to explain environmental racism is the recent example of the Flint Michigan water pollution. The predominantly minority populated city was not only supplied with polluted water, but ignored as if this phenomenon was not of anyone’s business. The city was left devastated from this occurrence and thousands of citizens had health issues because of the ignorant and racist governance of the city and state. This is where environmental racism comes into play, because if Flint was a city with a majority white population would the same exercise of power and ignorance would have…

Racism is one of the biggest problems in the world because many people commit hate crimes just because they hate other biological races, some people think there are races that are superior and use this belief as an excuse to commit crime. In addition, many people commit racial crimes because their ancestors were slaves, so they hold that chip on their shoulders forever. An example of racism in the criminal justice system can be to fire a black officer because the new supervisor hates black…

They believe that population growth is not a serious problem because the world has enough food and other resources, all must be distributed equiuly. The practices of multinational corporations and weak regulation of these practices account for many environmental problems. To get the most of sales, manufacturers design products intended to become obsolete. As a result of this planned obsolescence, consumers continually throw away used products and purchase replacements. (CO 9) Industry’s profit are at the expense of the environment, which sustains constant production and is constantly absorbing increasing amounts of waste. Industries do not stop there, they also use their wealth and power to influence politicians’ environmental and energy policies as well as the public’s beliefs about environmental issues. (CO 10) An example is in 2009, oil and gas industries spent $175 million on lobbying nearly eight times what pro-environmental groups spent. The conflict perspective is also concerned with environmental injustice (also known as environmental racism) the tendency for marginalized populations and communities to disproportionately experience adversity due to environmental…

The most current example of the environmental racism was the water crisis in Flint. In April of 2014, residents in Flint were exposed to lead-contaminated tape water after Flint switched the water source from Detroit water to Flint River. Most of those residents were black and poor. Michigan’s state government did not immediately response to the issue. White supremacy and capitalism played important roles in this late response. Poor black community had always been placed on the bottom of the hierarchy where the wealthy whites were on the top. They would not have access to resources which were available to the wealthy whites. The wealth whites disaccumulated resources from the poor minorities in order to overaccumulate their…

In the end, the destructive after effects of environmental racism is not exclusive to any single country around the world, but it is a global pandemic. "Racism and globalisation come together in the environment, with the phenomenon referred to as 'global environmental racism' - a manifestation of a policy which has found domestic expression in countries like the United States, but which also has a global dimension." Environmental racism is an example to a double standard set by society, where what is acceptable in one community or population is not acceptable whatsoever in other communities. One example would be the environmentally devastating method of extracting natural resources by corporations in developing countries. If such methods were…

Even though racism is and has always been an issue, we don’t often think about all the ways it can affect people of color. One example of this is environmental justice and racism, this is where corporations dump environmentally hazardous or degraded elements, such as toxic waste, pollution and urban decay near low-income or minority communities (Environmental Racism 2012, 1). It’s another unjust way African Americans have been and still continue to be treated. Many families have grown up in danger of being affected by these harmful substances and haven’t had a fair say when it comes to the accumulation of waste proximal to their area. From the early 1920s-1978, more than 80% of Houston's garbage landfills and incinerators have been located…

Environmental racism is a huge probelm and the government is making it seem like the rich countries and more important. “when rich countries can edit the poor out of the most important document on the gravest danger facing Earth”(Source 3:13) This means that noone thats rich is really serious about this situation and could careless about what the poor people and families are going through. “ But, as i wrote recently, there are certain people- particularly those with large concentrations of melanin in their skin, and smaller concentrations of money in the bank- who are suffering more of that fuckery than their less-melanated, more-resoured counterparts” (Source 3:2).”Many rich countries argue that $100 billion a year is an unrealistic demand;”(Source 3:8). Both of these statements show that people and many other families have to struggle because of racial discrimination. It's hard to see that people of color cannot be treated equally because their a different skin…

In 2013, in his official capacity in Center on Race, Poverty, and the Environment stated his disappointment in the implementation of Title IV of the Civil Rights Act, a law that combats discrimination on the basis of race by prohibiting said discrimination by federal money (Desmond-Harris 2013). These concerns date back to decades of continuous concern in the lack of environmental justice, as seen in environmental racism. As Bullard stated in 1999, “environmental racism is just one form of environmental injustice and is reinforced by government, legal, economic, political and military institutions” (1999). Bullard claims EPA “has not always recognized that many government and industry practices have adverse impacts on poor people and people of color” (1999). In 2013, Jenee Desmond-Harris entertained the same thoughts. These attacks to Presidents and the United States, as well as the United States Environmental Policy challenge the claims in support of the work Presidents such as First-President Bush, President Clinton, and President Obama have…
