The Auckland Waste Management and Minismisation Plan or AWMMP is an act created by the Auckland super city council to better Aucklands waste systems and cut down on the amount of waste it produces.
History
Until October 2010 Auckland had a system of 7 different councils that each controlled their own waste management systems. while this worked well in the ealier years of aucklands history from around late 1800’s to mid 1900’s it starte to become innefficeant, this is due to a few main factors. * The ever increasing population growth of all areas of Auckland * The segregated waste systems lead to an innefficant overall system * Increased volume of waste in the 21st centuary
Influences * The sustainability of Aucklands future ‘’I fully recognise that changes have to be made if we are to protect and enhance Auckland in the future.’’ * Maintain New Zealand’s green image ‘’ All the actions that this plan will eventually require of us, are ones we would expect of a country that brands itself as clean and green, and of a city that aspires to be the world’s most liveable.’’ * Gets inspiration off previous waste management schemes. ‘’It is driven by a number of pieces of legislation including the Waste Minimisation Act 2008 (WMA), the Local Government Act 2002 and the Local Government (Auckland Transitional Provisions) Act 2010’’ * They have themselves listed 3 main influencers or drivers for this act ‘’ The plan has three main drivers:‘’1. the legislative requirement that: “A territorial authority must promote effective and efficient waste management and minimisation within its district” (WMA)
2. the legislative need to review the seven former local authorities’ waste plans and the obvious desirability of forming one cohesive consistent WMMP for the region
3. the council’s adoption of an aspirational goal of Zero Waste.’’
