o If all four bacteria were able to metabolize glucose, explain why all four were not able to metabolize lactose and sucrose. Consider the different chemical structure of each carbohydrate and what the bacteria would need to metabolize each carbohydrate. The bacteria quickly metabolized the glucose, initially producing an acid slant and an acid butt in a few hours. After further incubation glucose is consumed because the bacteria could not use lactose or sucrose.…

The purpose of this lab experiment is to investigate factors that can affect the porcine pancreatic amylase enzyme activity in different environments such as the temperature, pH and also how being stored in extreme temperatures can affect the activity of the amylase. The activity of the amylase is going to be determined by the presence or absence of starch in the samples over time. There are some hypotheses on the Effects of temperature and pH; as I add the amylase to the starch in different temperatures the reaction’s rate increases in high temperatures; I belive that the amylase will work better. As the environment grows warmer, the amylase is going to become more energetic and more effective. Amylase is affected by environmental pH. I predict that the amylase activity will work best at a pH 7. As the pH changes from this point I predicted that the amylase activity is going to decrease and eventually stop. If I boiled and froze some amylase solution, and try to digest starch with at it at room temperature, I predict the previously-boiled and frozen amylase will not…

Based on the data above, all four hypotheses were proven correct. Based on the graph and data table, the optimal temperature for sucrase was 37°C because it had a reactivity score of 4, meaning it was very reactive. For the pH test, based on the graph and data table, the optimal pH was in fact ranged from 3-7. This means that any pH from 3-7, gives the highest rate of reaction to sucrase. The denatured test was proven correct because as the hypothesis said, if the enzyme and substrate are both untreated, the rate of reaction will be the highest and based on the graph and data table, this was the case.…

Enzymes are protein catalysts that speed up a chemical reaction without being consumed in the process. Enzymes are three-dimensional structures that consist of one or more polypeptide chains. The polypeptide chains form an active site (where a substrate will fit into). Enzyme molecules are folded into a very specific shape held together by the different forces of attraction, including electrical charges. The pH of the surrounding environment can affect the charges on the enzyme molecule, causing it's shape to be changed. Even a slight change in an enzyme molecule's shape can prevent it from working properly. This change of shape is called denaturation. The lab will look at the affects of pH on enzyme activity. High pH or low pH can make the enzyme loose all activity. Most enzymes work best in a neutral pH.…

Introduction “The Enzyme Reaction” An enzyme is a protein that acts as a catalyst, which brings out a biochemical reaction. A Catalase enzyme, the enzyme tested in this experiment, is found in almost all living organisms that are exposed daily to oxygen (such as fruits, vegetables and animals). Background Information The Catalase enzyme in this experiment is known for being less affective the warmer the temperature is. According to “Science fair projects” an enzyme becomes unstable at higher temperatures and the shape of the enzyme changes. The enzyme is also used to remove hydrogen peroxide from clothing in the textile industry.…
