Milestone Assignment
When reading all three of these epics, there was two hero’s that really stood out to me. Those two heros would be Beowulf and Hector of Troy. Hector was the obvious true hero of the Iliad, he defended Troy to literally the moment he died. Hector was killed by the stabbing of a vengeful and angry Achilles, something he knew was coming but didn’t back out.
Beowulf, as dedicated warrior, at a young age he falls and dies in the hands of a vengeful dragon. This dragon which has damaged his kingdom and people. His countless victories in battle are not only showing his own fighting abilities, but also show his commitment and love to his kingdom.
While Hector cannot escape the deadly fate he knew was going to happen, he fought anyways because he valued his people above him same as Beowulf who was also ready to accept his fate too, knowing he was going to lose his first battle and die, but Beowulf was not aware of what it was going to be like, and placed his hopes in the hand of God. At the end, the two of the hero’s having died glorious deaths and where respectively buried and looked upon as a great warrior and a hero to their town. In The Iliad, many of the male characters display heroic characteristics. Very good examples of such characters with heroic characteristics are Achilles and Hector. These two characters have many differences on why they are known as heroes. However, regardless of their differences and the fact that they are fighting for rival armies, they also have many traits that are similar between the two men. Both of the men display behavior that could be described heroic in terms of the Greek and trojans. The example of how they act differently would be the way they approach war and the violence and death that accompany it. Although Achilles knows that it is in his fate to battle but he is too prideful to act - Achilles’ mind changes when his close friend, Patroclus is killed in combat, by
