When reading all three of these epics, there was two hero’s that really stood out to me. Those two heros would be Beowulf and Hector of Troy. Hector was the obvious true hero of the Iliad, he defended Troy to literally the moment he died. Hector was killed by the stabbing of a vengeful and angry Achilles, something he knew was coming but didn’t back out.
Beowulf, as dedicated warrior, at a young age he falls and dies in the hands of a vengeful dragon. This dragon which has damaged his kingdom and people. His countless victories in battle are not only showing his own fighting abilities, but also show his commitment and love to his kingdom.
While Hector cannot escape the deadly fate he knew was going to happen, he fought anyways because he valued his people above him same as Beowulf who was also ready to accept his fate too, knowing he was going to lose his first battle and die, but Beowulf was not aware of what it was going to be like, and placed his hopes in the hand of God. At the end, the two of the hero’s having died glorious deaths and where respectively buried and looked upon as a great warrior and a hero to their town. In The Iliad, many of the male characters display heroic characteristics. Very good examples of such characters with heroic characteristics are Achilles and Hector. These two characters have many differences on why they are known as heroes. However, regardless of their differences and the fact that they are fighting for rival armies, they also have many traits that are similar between the two men. Both of the men display behavior that could be described heroic in terms of the Greek and trojans. The example of how they act differently would be the way they approach war and the violence and death that accompany it. Although Achilles knows that it is in his fate to battle but he is too prideful to act - Achilles’ mind changes when his close friend, Patroclus is killed in combat, by

In the Iliad, the characters of Hector and Achilles carry similar traits, although a deeper investigation into each character will show some stark contrasts between the two. Victory and defeat is not the most telling sign as to which is the greater hero of the two. There are flaws within each character and each one fights to overcome them throughout the story. By the end, it is clear which one emerges as the most appropriate symbol of a hero. The character of Achilles is greater than the character of Hector because he was able to overcome more of his character flaws to become a more realistic portrayal of what a heroic character should be.…

Both men are still known as being great warriors’ and that is why we are reading about them still in the 21st century and discussing their heroism. They are known as great warriors and fighters. In my opinion and from the reading, Beowulf is known as the hero who cared more about his people. He is remembered as “ the man most gracious and fair-minded, kindest to his people and keenest to win fame. (lines 3180-82). Achilles last actions of killing Hector and dragging his body to his camp, is seen as a savage to his own people and Hector family in lines 345-350, 24, we see how mean and rude he is as a…

Achilles cares about nothing other than himself and making sure that his name lives on forever, while Hector cares about winning the battle for his family and country. In one battle, Hector kills Patroclus thinking it was Achilles, which really sets Achilles off and is the reason that Achilles rejoins the war. When the two warriors finally meet near the end of the Epic, Hector is confronted with the fact that he is indeed going to die. Hector tries to think of ways to get out of the battle with Achilles, like bribery. This shows that Hector is not the perfect hero like many people may have thought when they first read about him. One cannot forget that Hector is only human, and that he does have the same characteristics as us humans do now. Everyone has to face a fear that they do not necessarily want to from time to time, and courage is the trait that brings the true heroes to the forefront. After being chased by Achilles for a while, Hector finally realizes that he has to fight Achilles. The fact that Hector stands up for himself and his country proves that he is courageous and that he is indeed a…

Beowulf, now being an elderly man, was faced with the difficult task to slay the dragon that had been guarding the castle it lives in. ¨I've never known fear, as a youth I fought in endless battles. I am old now, but i will fight again, seek fame still, if the dragon hiding in his tower dares to face me.” Beowulf soon battled the dragon, being burned by fire and left for dead, his trusted soldier, Wiglaf, had begun to battle along side his king. Above all, Wiglaf had been the only soldier who was loyal enough to defend his king in his struggle, much like a sidekick for modern day heros. ¨But Wiglaf sprinkled watch over his lord...” Then, once the battle had been over, Beowulf had asked his trusted companion to grab his reward from their victory. ¨For this, this gold, these jewels, I thank / Our Father in heaven, Ruler of the earth -/ for all of this, that his grace has given me, / Allowed me to bring my people while breath / still come to my lips.¨ Now dying a respected death, Beowulf leaves the duties of being king to Wiglaf for showing true bravery and loyalty. ¨Take what i leave, Wiglaf, lead my people, help them; my time is gone.¨ Provided that Beowulf had tirelessly fought evil day and day again for the rest of his life, along with a companion for his last battle, Beowulf can easily relate to the heroes of…
