Epilogue To The Giver
As they crossed the boundary, the colorful lights he thought that came from the windows of rooms had now disappeared. No more sound was heard besides the soft rubbing sound of Gabe’s squirming that echoed in the silence of the vast field. There were no houses, no sounds, no people. “Was leaving the community a good decision?” Jonas questioned himself. He was certain that the ride drove him unconscious and his mind was driving him crazy. He suspected all the memories he had received were a mere invention created by his community just to take up time. However, they had always seemed so concrete. Such tiring and hard work could not have been created for recreational purposes. Lost in confusion, he decided to continue walking and perhaps he …show more content…
It had been more than 12 hours since they had eaten for the last time; Gabe was very hungry. “I’m sorry, little one. We have run out of food. But I promise I will try to find you something… I’m also very hungry,” said Jonas exhausted.
Miles and miles to come. He walked for hours and hours as the mountain’s bitter cold was left behind. The freezing weather was now getting warm. Caring Gabe in his arms, walking on hills and drinking no water – he was sweating. He finally saw a group of dwellings and as he recalled some memories, he remembered that the right name for that was house. In this new place, he knew everyone had feelings and emotions just like he did, so he thought the appropriate name would be home instead of house.

He wanted to see the animals, especially the elephant, which was a part of hard memories for him. The elephant was in his mind for two reasons: he remembered a very disturbing memory, in which an elephant was killed with shot; and nostalgic, he remembered his little sister, Lily, whose comfort object was a stuffed elephant. However, Gabriel and he were starving, they did not have time to spend at a zoo.
He turned away from the zoo’s entrance and saw a short young lady walking on the street. She seemed kind and gentle, so he decided to talk to her.
“Excuse me, lady,” said Jonas. For his luck, they spoke the same language as his in the town.
“Yes, may I help you with anything?” she said nicely.
“I come from one of the communities isolated from Elsewhere. I left my parents and friends behind. I could not live in a place where people do not have feelings. I needed freedom and had to save my little brother, but now I have no home nor food.” he said desperately. Once again, for Jonas’s luck, the lady worked for the government and she was the one responsible for the search of the Receiver of Memory that had escaped from the community.
“I guess I know who you are. Jonas, right?” said the young lady, who had a smile on her face. She knew he would not go back to the community. So she had spoken with some close friends of hers about this boy that had escaped. In fact, she was looking for a volunteer to adopt
