Epiphany In Araby And A & P
Epiphanies Epiphany is a moment when you suddenly feel that you understand, or suddenly become conscious of, something that is very important to you. Both the main characters in A&P and Araby experience an epiphany. Though they are completely different stories both have a significant in the day-to-day experiences of their characters. It what they learned allowed them to understand their issue and a deeper way.
A&P is a story where the main character, Sammy works in a local discount grocery store the A&P. Throughout the story he is watching a group of girls describing there looks and features. The main character is the narrator who is a young boy. He is in love with an older girl and is blinded by his age. He doesn’t understand how the world really works. He had never spoken to the girl until one day Andre has the chance and he immediately promises to bring her something back from the bazaar. He says, “if I go,’ I said, ‘I’ll bring you something.’(Joyce, paragraph 4). As he promised he waited for the day to come, he was impatient with everyone around him because all he wanted was to go to the bazaar. His quest was to go to the bazaar and get the a gift for the girl he loves. However, through the story it’s revealed that he has an attachment to materialistic things. For example, he need money to buy the present, the present it’s self show his attachment to the materialistic items. As the story continues he ends up being late to the bazaar and it was closing up. He stops at a stand and he looked desperately for a decent gift that she would want, “ I lingered before her stall, though I knew my stay with useless, to make my interest in her wares seemed more real.” (Joyce, paragraph 3). Him not finding a present good enough shows how he doesn't really know her, he just want to impress her. l In the end he states, “waiting up into the darkness I saw myself as a teacher driven and derided by vanity; and my eyes burned with anguish and anger.” (Joyce, paragraph 4). This is his epiphany he realizes that he was dreaming about being with this girl, he had no chance of being with her. As the lights went out at the bazaar so did the light of
