the discrimination of hiring, promotions, job assignments, termination and harassment. For example the “Equal Employment Opportunity Commission” which was declared by President John F. Kennedy on March 6, 1961 but at this time only implied discrimination of race, religion and national origin. It wasn’t until President Barack Obama included sexual orientation and sexual identity, which he added “sex-stereotyping” into this act as illegal. This is just in the work field imagine trying to go through the public school system, applying to certain colleges, buying a house, starting a business, or starting a family. Same sex couples face several unique legal issues when they decide to become a family and bring children into the mix.
Normally married same-sex couples have less troubles adopting children and some may find it easier than heterosexual couples but in other cases where the couple isn’t legally married because the state the live in has set laws against it have a more difficult time. They have more rules and regulations than others and most of the time cannot adopt at all. However this could all be prevented if gay couples could legally marry without discrimination. More rights need to be given to the LGBTQ community considering they are alive and human as well as everyone else in the
world. “Transgender: An individual who identifies as the opposite sex from the sexual genitalia that he/she was born with.” Most people find transgender confusing and just automatically say its wrong without knowing any facts. It wasn’t until around 2010 until transgender was talked about in the United States. Transgender people face so much hate, discrimination and violence, within the world. There have been high rates of the murdering of transgender and about 22% have gotten harassment from the police themselves. About 90% report harassment, mistreatment, and discrimination at their job and the unemployment rate is two times higher than the general population. More people need to accept the fact that you cannot change how they feel about themselves. Is it wrong to change your natural hair color because you don’t like it anymore? Are you discriminated against if you shave the hair off your body because “god made you like that for a reason?” Most people or religions don’t see a problem with this so why are so many people against the transgender population? It is just made up of people that don’t like a part of themselves anymore and want to change for their personal self. After all thing considered It is understandable that religion may stand in the way of the LGBTQ community. Many religions say that the bible states the homosexuality is a sin and shouldn’t be done. For example “Leviticus 20:13, If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltness is upon them." Religious individuals relate their life solely on the bible and nothing else, which is their choice but not everyone follows the same code, hints other religions. On the other hand, how can an individual discriminate, harass, and mistreat someone for being himself or herself. The first amendment is freedom of speech and take full advantage of it but everyone was taught to treat others how you want to be treated. Among the youth population suicide is the second leading cause of death and the attempts are four to six times greater in LGBQ youth. About thirty percent attempt suicide around the age of fifteen and one out of six students consider suicide. LGBQ individuals that come from homophobic families are 8.4 times greater to attempt suicide. Parents often push their kids into being what they want, and wont think about the affect they are having on their children. About forty one percent of the transgender population has attempted suicide, compared to the general population which in 1.6%. There are many hotlines and websites to help individuals In need but sometimes it isn’t enough to conquer the tough times and the abusive people. First and foremost people need to be taught to accept everyone and if they are too arrogant for that, they should learn not to hurt others. Leading cause of suicide is not feeling accepting, either because they individual is being verbally or physically bullied at home, work, social media, or in a school setting. “Happiness can exist only in acceptance” – George Orwell. If people just kept their negative comments to themselves the statics may drastically go down. Currently many protest are going on in the United States involving the LGBTQ community because of the recent president put into office. Donald trump is trying to revoke all rights that the community has fought for throughout the years. Trumps statement regarding equal treatment for the LGBTQ people, "its something I haven't given lots of thought to." The president isn't aware of the major discrimination LGBTQ rights in his own country and seems to be encouraging a horrific act. America is starting to take steps back of providing basic human rights for every individual but you know what they say "history repeats itself," and no chain is being broken.
