NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Equality and Diversity
Unit 1: Exploring Equality and Diversity

Session 2: Describing yourself in a diverse society

How others use specific qualities to describe / define you

Other people may tend to describe you in terms of their relationship with you. For example, a parent may see a particular person as their child, yet this same person may also be seen as a parent, a husband or wife, a work colleague, a boss or a team mate – to name just a few.

Example:
A few people were asked to describe Fatima. Their responses are in the table below:

|Person |Relationship |How they describe Fatima |
|Dan |Parent collecting his children after school |I see a smartly dressed black woman in her |
| | |early thirties. |
|Chris |Work colleague |I see a brilliant research chemist. |
|Sandra |Younger sister |I see an older sister who is kind, always |
| | |helps me and someone who makes me laugh. |
|Kate |Player in local hockey team |I see a positive good spirited team mate and|
| | |a good friend. |
|Selina |Church member |I see someone who is devoted, attends |
| | |regularly and who supports church activities|
