In the Puritan age, the men were the more dominant sex when it came to gender roles. Men were more in control in the house. They were not involved with raising the children unless they became problematic. They also farmed and controlled the land that they possessed, usually sunrise to sundown. Around the area, they held important positions and made important decisions, especially at church. Usually most of the men would talk while the women would sit back and listen. No lady would ever talk. It was …show more content…
the men.
The beauty standards in this era remind me of pilgrims. They had long hair that was never cut. They never had time to keep themselves groomed because they were always at work. The puritans also always had a hat on, just like the pilgrims.
In my opinion, there was no objectification in the puritan time. The males were always dominate and were great leaders. The women never thought of them as an object. They were men doing their jobs and keeping the family satisfied.
The Definition of Masculinity in the puritan age is different from today. Many of the men were dominate and strong human beings. Males would haul huge bales of hay around and they would stay in shape from all the work they did. They were always at work and keeping the land under control. They were the leaders of the group and would make decisions that would help/affect the land.
The Jazz age was a bit different than the Puritan age. They would work to earn money for the maintenance of the women. Everything they did was for the woman. “ Here, deares'.”She groped around in a waste-basket she had with her on the bed and pulled out the string of pearls.” (Tom Buchanan). He got her a beautiful pearl necklace. Males would make sure the woman was well kept. They were dominant over them as well. Males were usually the tough guys and the ladies were flappers.
The typical beauty standards in this era were slick back hair. Most men dressed well in a suit and tie or suspenders with a tie. Many of the men in this era were considered “gangsters”. Just like in the Great Gatsby, Gatsby was always well dressed and was into the gambling and making money.
The jazz age was in the 1920's to the end of the Great Depression.
This was the time of the Second World War. Men were on the front line in the war because everyone else thought it was a man’s job. Their bodies were used to fight for our freedom. A girl could have done the same thing, but they use the men because they were the “tougher” of the two sexes at the time.
During the jazz age, most males were in a gang. They were always clean cut and shaved, yet tough. They are the guys you don’t want to mess with. Masculinity in this era was all about being tough. Guys would make trouble and pick fights if they had to. Men spent much of their time gambling and would want to get as much money as they could get.
Males of today, are more of stay at home men. The amount of gender roles decreased as equality became bigger for both sexes. A female could get the same job as a male and get paid about the same. It used to be where a woman could not work at a factory due to the gender roles of the past. They were to be stay at home moms and or housewives. Sometimes men still dominant over the females. They like to be in charge and be the stronger of the two, yet sometimes that doesn’t …show more content…
happen.
Now a days, the beauty standards for men are higher than they ever were for men in the past .
Facial hair is a must. If a guy does not have facial hair as they get older, other males would make fun of them. That male would then not want to be in public. Men believe their appearance is more important to women. Men try to impress women so much when they don’t have to. Men spend billions of dollars to keep their body image in check.
The over use of objectification in today's society is absurd . As said in English, “a male is using his body to be a backdrop for a ladies beautiful dress in prom pictures” (Ms. Jenkinson). The male is just an object standing there and smiling behind a girl who has a beautiful dress on. The man acts as a backdrop for her. Male modeling is another way men are objectified. They wear the clothing and show off their body just to advertise a product. Men's bodies have been used as an object for clothing just to sell the product.
In my opinion, the definition of masculinity is more feminine. Males today have worried a lot more about what they look like, including being more emotional. A lot more gays are coming out which show that some guys are not as masculine as you think. Sure, you still have those masculine straight men who still worry about their looks. Even about how to impress someone they like. Men are becoming more in touch with their feminine
side.
Over the years, some things have changed, while other things have stayed the same. Men’s equality isn’t always going to be right. A lot of things aren’t right, but sometimes change is for the better.
