Erectile dysfunction (ED) is projected to affect roughly 20% of adult men over the age of 20. Erectile dysfunction is a widespread disorder among men that has substantial public health implications and is defined as the incapability to initiate or maintain an erection that is suitable for sexual intercourse. This is a difficult subject for most men to talk about, which led to many misconceptions that still exist such as erectile dysfunction is a normal part of aging and men affected by erectile dysfunction have no sexual desire. Treatments for erectile dysfunction include oral medications such as Staxyn, Viagra, Cialis and Levitra. These pills work directly on the penis by unwinding smooth muscles in the penis. Penile implants are typically used when there are clear medical causes of erectile dysfunction and when it is unlikely that the problem will be resolve naturally or with other treatments. Sexual intercourse can be resumed six weeks after surgery.
