Physics Laboratory Chairs

Calculations and Data table

The Physics lab chair that we’ve made are based on the anthropometric data that we’ve gathered and we’ve have surveyed from the 30 respondents. For this particular chair we consider the sitting height, shoulder elbow, buttock knee, popliteal height, knee height, back width and buttock width. We calculated these data in order to design an ergonomic chair that will suit the students in their Physics lab subject. For the sitting height, based on the computation we’ve obtained the value of 78.88 for the 5th percentile and 95.36 for the 95th percentile. The shoulder elbow height, based on the computation we’ve obtained the value of 32.29 for the 5th percentile and 37.71 for the 95th percentile. For the buttock knee height, we’ve obtained the value of 49.72 for the 5th percentile and 59.53 for the 95th percentile. For popliteal height, we’ve obtained the value of 42.32 for the 5th percentile and 52.30 for 95th percentile. For the knee height, we’ve obtained the value of 50.71 for the 5th percentile and 60.32 for the 95th percentile.
For the back width we’ve obtained the value of 38.62 for the 5th percentile and 52.62 for the 95th percentile. And for the buttock width, we’ve obtained the value of 31.26 for the 5th percentile and 48.33 for the 95th percentile. This data are all based on our respondents that have taken the course of Physics

    Robie 1

We began by making a simple full-size prototype with accurate angles and dimensions. We picked out an old chair that was at our dispense and were able to disguise it as the Robie 1 by attaching a long piece of cardboard with vertical dal rods to simulate the rungs in the back. This confirmed our suspicions that the 90° rigid back is uncomfortable and provides no lumbar support. Using the measurements from the dimensioned drawing, we found where the chair failed when compared to the anthropometrics of a human. With the seat at 18" high, it is 1.8" too short for the median man, 3.7" too short for the 99%, and .7" too tall for the 1%. This highlights the necessity for adjustable heights, however, we couldn't pin down how to make that work for a chair like this. Therefore, I will be drawing the chair for myself, with a seat at 20" high. The next issue deals with seat depth. At 17.9" deep, the chair is .8" too long for the median man, 2.7" too long for the 1%, and .5" too short for the 99%. However, after adding in the rule of having a fist-width between your leg and the edge of the chair, the seat is too deep for all of them. For myself, I estimate a necessary seat depth of 15". With a seat width of 15.75", it is 1.55" too wide for the median man, and 4.35" too wide for the 1%, and 1.15" too narrow for the 99%. However, the seat being wider than necessary is no problem, so I will leave it be.…

The foot length in mean is 2cm out of proportion but then again the mode is out by 4cm and median is out by 5cm. The elbow to hand tip was 3cm out of proportion for mode and mean but median the elbow to hand was out of proportion by about…

For this assignment four intervals based on our own personal heights must be calculated. I am 6 feet 4 inches tall. My height in inches (or H) equals 76. These intervals include inequalities that are categorized as between or compound inequalities. One interval in this assignment will be a regular inequality. Wherever “BMI” appears in the inequalities, we will exchange the formula and solve the inequality for W to find the weight ranges that fit each category for my height.…

"Ergonomics" is the discipline that examines the capabilities and limitations of people. The term ergonomics is based on the two Greek word "ergon" and "nomos", which together mean "the laws of work". In terms of design, the focus of ergonomics is man; and it aims to design appliances, technical system and tasks in a way to improve human safety, health, comfort and performance. Also, it makes products easy to be used. In the following paragraphs, I will discuss a number of factors including: the provision of energy, the application of forces, the problems of body sizes and postures, the effect of climate, the limitation of sense organs, the design of display, the design of controls and the person/machine information exchange, in terms of how and why they are important for design.…
