Eric Birling
Character Analysis
Eric Birling
I think that J B Priestly put Eric Birling in the play ‘An Inspector Calls’ because he is an interesting character, and is not quite like the rest of his family. Eric is a young man living at home with his parents (Arthur and Sybil Birling) and his sister (Sheila Birling). He is the son of a prosperous manufacturer living in a large suburban house. Eric comes from an upper class family. His mother is a prominent member of the Brumley Woman’s Charity Organization and his father has his own business. The Birling family have a maid, Edna and are also able to enjoy a life of great comfort and leisure. An example of this is when Mr Birling says ‘You ought to like this port, Gerald. As a matter of fact, Finchley told me it’s exactly the same port your father gets from him.’ This shows that the family were upper class because they are talking about port, which not all of the lower class people would know much about.
One of the main features that make Eric is an interesting character is that he is quite secretive about his life, so that when the inspector questions Eric the Birling’s are in for a huge surprise. They learn that he is an alcoholic, has stolen money from his father and has gotten a lower class girl pregnant. During this time period the rich didn’t really associate with the poor; so his family, especially his mother, are shocked when he reveals the news. Eric’s personality doesn’t really change throughout the play, though his feelings and emotions do. At the beginning of the play, Eric is in the dining room with his family. They are celebrating the engagement of his sister and her fiancé (Gerald Croft). Eric seems quite happy, as he is slightly drunk. Inspector Goole arrives at the Birling’s house. He questions each character until they confess that they each had a part in causing Eva Smith’s death; starting with Mr Birling and finishing with Eric.
Eric’s emotions change from happiness to guilt when he realizes that he

Being gloomy, meaning dark and mean, is also a negative trait that Eric the villain possesses. Eric and his gloomy personality is very prominent in this book. In the book, “Tangerine,” Eric makes fun of Tino one of Paul’s friends. Tino defends himself and Eric gloominess kicked in. Eric then punched Tino right across his face knocking him out. Eric stands there like nothing happened as Tino lays there in pain. All of Paul's friends ran to Tino to help him. Eric turned around with a grin and walks away. Paul's being cheerful instead of running at Eric and hitting him he gives him a solemn yet mad stair. Eric then turned around and walks away. He once again was acting like a villain. Eric rips the gloomy part right out of him and puts it to use.…

Furthermore, Mrs Birling pretends to be ignorant about Eric’s drinking problem”(staggered) it isn’t true…” the paralinguistic feature “(staggered)’’ is effective as her action mirrors her false shock and pretence. If I were to blame one person in particularly I would blame Eric as he got Eva pregnant and left her in a state beyond recovery. Although he offered her money to live, Eva did not except the money. This is because she had reasons to believe that the money was stolen. We later found out that the money was indeed stolen from his dads work. This isn’t the only thing that Eric’s parents find out about him. They also discover that he is an alcoholic and has been drinking heavily for a while. It was this drinking that lead to Eva getting pregnant and ultimately causing her to commit a brutal suicide. Despite all this I have a feeling that there is something the inspector is hiding, I think that he is trying to stir things up in the Birling family. I find it interesting to note that he choosing to visit them on the day that Sheila and ___________ are to celebrate their engagement. It is also interesting that his name “Goole” implies ghosts and monsters. This could have something to do with the death of Eva Smith. So in conclusion I don’t think that individually the Birling family have a lot of input towards Eva’s death but as a group they ultimately caused…

The attitude of the Inspector towards each the characters differs significantly which shows the audience contrast between them. The inspector is representing the opinions of J.B. Priestley, so we can infer that these views on each character should influence the viewers opinion on them also however, his judgemental nature suggests that he is not a real inspector which emphasizes the moral message being portrayed. The inspector deems Mr and Mrs Birling to be most at fault, he is more forceful and aggressive with Mrs Birling; this is show in her responses with stage directions like “severely” and “sharply”. He also reserves a particular dislike for Mr Birling and is aggressive and impatient with him; stage directions of “savagely” and “sharply” are used. Sheila is dealt with more lightly as she understands and accepts, showing remorse. Similarly, Eric is not dealt with so harshly – this conveys the difference between the generations. The inspector is also more sympathetic towards Gerald which is clear when he says “at least he made her happy for some time”.…

If we look at Eric as a character, we should be able to associate him with a certain conscience, which, when you think about it, is what the Inspector tried to do; get the characters to appeal to their conscience. Now Eric, along with Sheila, both give real, emotional responses to the death of Eva/Daisy, whereas Gerald and Mr/Mrs Birling didn't. Talk about that; surely as responsible, wealthy adults, they should be the mature ones, accepting responsibility and taking the blame. Yet it took the youngest child to accept fault.…

We can see this when he says “Sheila means a tremendous lot to me” over the engagement dinner with Gerald. In Edwardian Britain, social status was measured by material wealth, etiquette and moral responsibility. The play is sat in an industrial town, which centres around the jobs of the main characters. An Inspector calls starts off with the family celebration of an engagement between two social classes, the inspector then calls to interrogate the family about their ignorance and selfishness in contributing to the death of Eva smith (if you believe it was all about one girl). A quick witted and powerful figure of the inspector manipulates and influences their answers without saying much himself, till they all confess their involvement with the suicide. One character who has a large involvement with Eva smith is Eric. We see how while the others being questioned he is moral but childish whereas when it comes to him he matures.…

In Act 1, Priestley uses the character of Inspector Goole to arrive unexpectedly at the Birlings household and not only shatter the very foundations of their lives but challenge us all to examine our senses of right and wrong. His use of the Inspector opens the door to explore responsibility in this play as he one by one challenges them to reveal their guilt. I think that the idea of the play and particularly the role of the Inspector are to try to bring the Birling family to understand that they have a moral responsibility for the death of Eva Smith, if not a legal one. Therefore it could be said that Eva Smith was simply a victim of her class and time. This point is very significant and is the basis of the entire play, to grasp it is imperative to the understanding of the play, without this, an analysis of responsibility would be far more difficult.…

In contrast to Mr and Mrs Birling Sheila has total opposite views and realises what she did was wrong, and wishes that she could go back and never get Eva sacked-…

The general form and structure of the play enhances Mrs. Birling’s character to an extent. By placing her second last in the line of enquiry, the impact of her actions is greater on the victim than other characters. She enters amidst a dramatic pause, when Sheila is trying to examine the Inspector, ‘…I don’t understand about you...’ to which the Inspector says, ‘There’s no reason why you should’. This adds on to the audience’s curiosity making them think what’s to come.…

After this his life started to go downhill, he started to go internal. Eric would go to school to clown, none of the teachers could tell him anything.
