the future people would surrender their freedom for Security. New forms of spying emerged in today’s society. Such as the government proposal to exterminate taxing citizen on gas prices but rather pay for the amount of miles traveled. Even though gas would be free, you would be tracked, peoples Fourth Amendment would be violated, and your freedom of movement would be limited. Other forms of spying do exist such as, love spying, and social network spying. Should a person be forced to decide between security and safety over free will? Is this new proposal acceptable or another violation on our constitution? The obvious fact is that we deserve to have privacy, and that the new proposals are keen ways to keep taps on normal American Citizens. I choose freedom over security, what would you?
Over the past decade we have seen a technological boom and more internet usage then in the past centuries combined.
This makes us more prone to hacker attacks, identity thefts, and privacy right violations. A person might enjoy getting information on websites, and increasing their security on privacy. The reality is that the NSA is the one creating the same software’s meant to protect our privacy. Therefore is it not easy for them to decode these same software’s meant to keep us safe. It is true that terrorists use websites and Tele-Communication to recruit and attack, but does that make it right for government agencies to abuse the Patriot Act, and the Fourth Amendment? Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, High-five, and other forms of social networks privacy terms are virtually non existent. “Facebook and other networks do agree that on their privacy terms to use your information for marketing and Intelligence gathering purposes” Erick Montero. This means that if a certain company wanted to find out how many people like its products, movies, shows or other things, Facebook would allow it to have access to it, for certain amount cash. So the next time you click I agree, make sure to deeply think about it. Our Fourth Amendment gives us the right to not accept unlawful search seizers and in an extent the right to privacy in a persons own car, home, or property. This Amendment is no longer in existence with the rise of police brutality, backed by the city the work for. “So long as you are seen as a threat, the fourth doesn’t apply to you” Erick
Montero.
The introduction of a black box design to track a person is just the tip of the iceberg. The U.S government introduced a new device that would calculate the amount of miles a person travels and charge the persona a certain amount of tax. This means that gas would be free, but your right to free movement is limited and tracking would be intense. Evan Halper stated in his article The Black Box, “As America's road planners struggle to find the cash to mend a crumbling highway system; many are beginning to see a solution in a little black box that fits neatly by the dashboard of your car….The devices, which track every mile a motorist drives and transmit that information to bureaucrats, are at the center of a controversial attempt in Washington and state planning offices to overhaul the outdated system for funding America's major roads”. This Information would be gathered and stored for the purpose of charging you tax. Not just that, but if there was to be a crime and a persons car was present at the crime scene, that person would be in deep mess with the courts and even be convicted of being related to the crime. Evan goes on to say “while Congress can't agree on whether to proceed, several states are not waiting. They are exploring how, over the next decade, they can move to a system in which drivers pay per mile of road they roll over”. Some states have even taken it further and started to register thousands of motorists and drivers. Doesn’t this harm the environment if gas was to be free for all? Was it not the U.S government’s goal to reduce pollution in the air? The contradiction, decision making, and planning is obvious to people. When it comes down to it, spying and money making is the government’s main objective.
The Patriot Act was created in Oct 26, 2001. Evan Halper stated that the Patriotic Act was created “for the purpose of pursuing all terrorists within the US and around the world, also investigating them without consent, if there is legitimate reason to. Instead the NSA interpreted this act and started a massive domestic and external surveillance of one billion people”. This is a massive amount of information design to simply spy on normal American citizen. Evan also stated that “The reason was that there was about less than 0.002% of the United States population that would commit terrorism and therefore everyone came to be a victim of privacy violation”. Just because a few individuals would do some horrific damage to society, should our rights as American Citizens be violated? It just comes back to what Benjamin Franklin said before. Yet once the lies are revealed and the truth is told we choose to blindfold our own eyes and the very government created by the people and for the people hunts down the ones who leaked the massive surveillance hunt. People like Edward Snowden and Bradley Manning are called traitors and charged with treason when they revealed the truth to the very citizens of their country. If these allegations are false then why is our government still pursuing to sentencing them? For sure the leak did an unforgettable damage to the U.S international interest and made it own closest allies more concerned and distant. Whether it’s social networking, private property, or individual privacy, every type of privacy violation is committed on the daily bases. The most dangerous part is how citizens don’t seem to understand how vast and wide these surveillances are. “1/6 of earth’s populations Emails, text messages, phone calls are intercepted by the NSA. Even the very allies that stand with us against terrorism such as, Brazil, United Kingdom, and France are targets for privacy right violation” Halper. This surveillance operates beyond imagination and their main focus to watch, watch, and watch. How far will this go? Will these types of surveillance be used against us in a court system? All of these questions need to be answered by the citizens, because we sure do need to protect our rights.
With the introduction of Circuit Closed TV (CCTV) operating in more than 100 million homes and businesses which is all available to terrorism, NSA, and other unwanted fourth amendment violators. We expect to be free, but in reality we are blinded and brainwashed by the media outlet with unwanted and unnecessary information about celebrities, movies, and other topics. The car surveillance is just a tip of the iceberg. I myself experienced the amount of surveillance that is happening around us. About three months ago, two young men roughly in their late 30’s came knocking on my door. They flipped out their FBI badges and asked me in a polite manner, “we are FBI agents from the Minneapolis division, may we come in sir” (John J. Gainer). I was shocked and disoriented to imagine what they would say. I let them in and they took a seat, what they said was “we have been conducting investigation on bank robberies and domestic violence in Minneapolis, is it possible that you might have some information regarding this manner…….the rewards for it will be a great amount of finance” (John Gainer). I immediately took notice; about three days ago I had a phone conversation with one of my female friends who was talking to me a about how she was facing domestic violence in her home. I was being phone tapped by the FBI, and how knows how far they will continue to do this. I lost the freedom to say what I want and when to say it when they came. I no longer could write down my inner thoughts, including this paper.
Fear can be a huge thing to deal, especially when you're in a position like mine. When you are watched continuously without rest, what are your choices? Is there any freedom? How can we tackle with problems like these and others surrounding us? We have rights and it’s our constitutional right act upon it and enforces them. I don’t want to be tracked down like a wild animal, would you want to be? We have the power to create organizations and civil right movements to tackle issues like these. Whether its social, vehicle, or network spying we can have a better future by simply standing to big brother. We are a democratic government design by the people and for the people, and therefore have more power then the government. The government has been tolerated enough for its corrupt decision making, spying, and not interested in the American value of freedom, our basic ideas of life, liberty, and freedom.
