In Ernest Hemingway’s short story, “Big Two-Hearted River”, the author wrote this story driven by events of his own life that happen during and after World War 1, where he volunteered for the American ambulance department in France and later got transferred to the frontline of Italy where he was seriously hurt. Using the character of Nick Adams that Hemingway created after the return from war. The character in this story tries to overcome his fears and trauma that he faced during war. He felt that as the trout moved around smoothly in the river that he could start over and be free to let the past go and live. As the short story continues, Nick is trouble free and the writer is giving the reader the imagination the Nick is free from worries except for his back pack seems to be weighing him down because it’s heavy. Nick noticed, the grasshopper that attacked his sock, Hemingway used the grasshopper as a symbol of new life as Nick let the hopper fly away. The grasshoppers were damaged from the fire and Nick damaged from war they both had a chance for a new beginning “Fly away somewhere” (Perkins 164). The writer wants the reader to pay attention to the river, trout, and grasshoppers through this story. The walking through the stretch of the meadow gave Nick a feeling of freedom. Hemingway added some excitement to the story by giving the character Nick someone to think about in the story and that was his friend Hopkins and his way of making coffee it even made Nick laugh remembering this and soon went to sleep. Going into Hemingway part two of his short story after Nick woke up from what seems to be a lovely morning Nick was excited by the river. Hemingway outline a particular detail for Nick’s strategy for preparing to go fishing before he goes into the river. Nick paid close attention to the grasshoppers because he planned on catching some. This was a man that came prepared with everything he needed, he even had onions in his back pack. At this point in the story Nick was getting ready to fish and he was happy feeling as if he is accomplishing the goal he has set out to do which was to protect himself from the past
