onny is faced with a problem that was necessary to overcome to leave behind his past comparable to Jeff. Sonny’s brother witness his brother being praised at something that he found himself passionate about “There was a lot of applause and some of it was real”(Sonny’s Blues 100). The struggle between Sonny and his brother came through his dream of being a musician. Being successful in music was an imagine that his brother wouldn’t have thought of. Sonny experienced a tough life over the many years he followed his passion in music even though his brother doubted his rebellion, but through his music he is able to leave behind his old life of hardships and rekindles a bond between brothers. Jeff chooses to act upon his thoughts and actions leaving behind his past self that follow orders. Instead of taking orders, Jeff voluntarily subjects himself to darkenfloxx“I used it, dropped it down the heat vent…”(Escape From Spiderhead 9). A similar situation occurred at the beginning of the story as Jeff mentions how he didn’t care for the fate of both Heather and Rachel. Jeff decided to inject himself with the darkenfloxx sparing Rachel sacrificing himself and preventing Rachel from receiving the pain. The progressive Jeff shows from disregarding the fate between Rachel from darkenfloxx to preventing her to receive by taking it himself. Not only does he escape his past of being a subject he chooses to act upon his free will and free himself from his past. Even though the outcomes of Sonny and Jeff disagreement may be different as Sonny smiles with his success due to his music, Jeff suffers physically because of his sacrifice.     Two major themes throughout the story are drug abuse, what got Sonny locked up in the first place, and brotherhood. When the narrator finds out that Sonny is in prison due to the abuse of drugs, he says, "Look. I haven't seen Sonny for over a year, I'm not sure I'm going to do anything. Anyway, what the hell can I do?" (601) This shows that the narrator feels like there is nothing he can do anymore. The reader is able to understand that Sonny loves his brother, but does not understand his life choices. However, when Sonny gets out, the narrator takes him back into his home and decides to remember the promise to his mother of not betraying his brother. He begins to realize that the meaning of being a brother means helping each other out from a bad time, in Sonny's case, drugs. It takes time for the narrator to realize that Sonny is just a person who is channeling his pain and anger into music. Sonny and the narrator lost their father and mother at a young age, so now the brothers are all that each other has left.
