Throughout the experiment of her brother’s intelligence, Bart is naive to the experiment his sister is conducting between the hamster and himself. For example, in the beginning of the episode, Lisa get the idea while sitting at the table with her mother. Marge suggests running a hamster through a maze, and Lisa imagines a hamster doing just that. The hamster's head is replaced with that of Bart, and the hybrid creature promptly gets stuck, crying, "Help me! Help me!" Lisa laughs wickedly. Lisa fails to inform not Bart, not anyone about the experiment. Moreover, Lisa purchases the Hamster from a Pet Store, failing to mention the reasons she is buying it to the pet store owner, therefore carrying out an experiment on an animal. Finally, near the end of the episode, Bart finds Lisa’s book about the experiment. When he has found this out, he is unimpressed, and hides the book from her. In conclusion, the first guidelines that the ESRC presents, says that all experiments involving humans must be reviewed, and the potential benefits of the experiment outweigh the potential risks. Lisa failed to meet all the ethical guideline requirements created by ESCR. First, her experiments were not reviewed by anyone other than herself, and the experiment benefits did outweigh the risks. Her brother was uniformed about the research, and therefore did not participate voluntarily. In addition, she also failed to protect Bart from physical pain and psychological harm. Finally, not only does Lisa fail to keep Bart’s privacy under wraps, but Lisa fails to keep her distance from the subject, thus disrupting the validity and objectivity of the research method being performed. Although there is no average set of ethical guidelines, one must be open to discussion of them in the world of research in sociology.
