SECTION 1: WHAT IS ESP?
Definition
The origins of ESP
The end of the WW2 in 1945 heralded an age of enormous and unprecedented expansion in scientific, technical and economic activity on an international scale.
For various reasons, most notably the economic power of the US in the post-war world, this role fell to English.
It created a new generation of learners who knew specifically why they were learning a language. “Tell me what you need English for and I will tell you the English that you need” became the guiding principle of ESP.
Definition
ESP is an approach to language teaching in which all decisions as to content and method are based on the learner’s reason for learning.
Comparison with General Training
Definition:
GE ESP
English for General Purpose (GE) refers to context such as the school where needs can not readily be specified. It is more usefully considered as providing abroad foundation rather a detailed and selective specification of goals like ESP. English for specific purposes (ESP) includes specialized programs which are designed to develop the communicative use of English in a specialized field of science, work or technology.
Characteristics of ESP:
Defined to meet specific needs of the learner;
Makes use of the underlying methodology and activities of the discipline it serves;
Centered on the language, skills, discourse and genres appropriate to these activities;
May be related to or designed for specific disciplines;
May use, in specific teaching situations, a different methodology from that of general English;
