The world is a global village, connected by all forms of media. The global village has changed the way people think and the way they see the world. Barack Obama’s speech “A New Beginning” in Cairo, Egypt on the 4th of June 2009 was directed to a huge audience. The speech aims to unite the western world with the Islamic world by promoting change. Barack Obama highlights the positive and negative aspects of the global village by the use of techniques.
The main topic Barack Obama discusses in his speech is the unity upon cultures and religions. He uses references from the Holy Quran to show how the U.S and Islam are related in beliefs and principles. He also quotes words from the Holy Quran to criticize violent extremism, “The Holy Quran teaches us that whoever kills an innocent – is as if he has killed all mankind” and another quote is “And the Holy Quran also says whoever saves a person, it is as if he has saved all mankind”. This is an effective technique because the speech is directed to all Muslim’s and they would be pleased with this because it is something they can understand very well.
Secondly Barack Obama talks about the importance of women’s rights. Obama advertises the idea that the U.S will join Muslim majority countries to support literacy for women and assist them with their education. He states this is not an Islamic issue but a global issue, “now let me be clear, women’s issues of equality are by no means simply an issue for Islam”. He strongly appeals to the Islamic audience by declining the stereotype that women who wear the Hijab are less equal; he states this in the quote “A women who is denied education is denied equality”.
In his speech he mentions the rights and responsibilities of nations on nuclear weapons. He says “Since the Islamic Revolution, Iran has played a role in acts of hostage-taking and violence against U.S troops and civilians”. This depicts a negative aspect of the global village.
