Reflective Essay Choosing two rhetorical concepts for this assignment was not an easy task, but once I figured out what I wanted to present, the existing and invented word that came to mind were paradox and obscribtion. Not only are the terms rhetorically associated, but also they are terms that many use when writing literature, poems, or when speaking. My term obscribtion is taken from the term objective description, which is a strategy many writers use when writing. They either need to be objective or subjective and I chose the unbiased term, objective.
Paradox is a figure of speech and is defined as a statement or proposition that, despite sound (or apparently sound) reasoning from acceptable premises, leads to a conclusion that seems senseless, logically unacceptable, or self-contradictory (Google dict.) Most writers and speakers use a paradox because it draws attention and gives emphasis to certain parts of a phrase. It also allows the reader the ability to gain his or her own interpretations, relations, and conclusions. By the writer using a paradox, it forces the reader to dig beneath the surface for a deeper meaning. That is what makes literature, literature! And poetry, poetry! If writers did not use paradoxes there would be no mystery, no challenge to get an insight on a writers mind and discover what he or she intended for the poetry or literature.
When writing an essay obscription is mainly accurate, not drawing any attention to the writer, especially with regards to the writer's feelings. A descriptive essay uses physical details of a person, place, or thing in order to give readers a sensory impression of whatever you are describing. Descriptive detail also, generally, conveys a writer's impression of or attitude about the subject. Objective description focuses on the object you are portraying rather than on your personal reactions to it (Rhetorical Strategies). Many writers choose to write objectively so that the reader can get his or her own view or opinion when drawing the picture or conclusions of the readings. When writing subjectively many writers use their feelings and emotions and it gives a biased opinion to the readers, therefore my choice of writing would be objectively.
Choosing these two terms fit perfectly well in rhetoric strategies and association. Not many people use paradoxes, but those who do know what they want the readers or the listeners to gain from it. It challenges the writer’s perspective and gives the readers a variety of interpretations of what the writer wants to get across to its readers. When using obscription, many of us use it without even knowing we are using it. Many of us do not like to be subjective, therefore we leave little detail and emotion out when we speak or write. When trying to make a fair argument, one should chose to use facts and not their opinion. Overall whether one chooses to be objective or subjective or use a paradox it reflects on the reader and how they will interpret the readings or speeches.
