Rainbow’s End
1. The prescribed text that we have been given is Rainbows End the play was written by Jane Harrison the play premiered on the 18th February 2005 at the Melbourne Museum. It was directed by Wesley Enoch.
2. Gladys is caught between two cultural context- her Aboriginality, which she is denying and he desire to belong in the white society. Because she doesn’t feel comfortable in her Aboriginality, she is anxious about her identity. Once the flood occurs and she loses the encyclopaedias, she realises the way to make her daughter’s life better is to embrace her Aboriginality and fight for her and her daughter’s rights. Ths once she has worked out which group she truly belongs to, her identity- her self-confidence and her focus – grows stronger. Hence a sense of identity come from belonging

3. Nan has a strong sense of her identity and belonging she knows what group and culture and place she belongs to – the aboriginals, the biyala (the tribal totem tree) on the Murry River, her traditional homeland.

4. Dolly has a strong sense of belonging- to her family there on the flats. She accepts her Aboriginality even though she is receiving a white education. Her sense of identity grows from her sense of belonging so when errol offers her a different world, a wider world of Melbourne, to belong to, she rejects the offer.
