Beavers live in most parts of Canada (the north, the west and on the prairies). They are found in wild areas of Canada. Small numbers are found in Europe, Asia, and the tip of South America. They live in and around water. An adult beaver weighs from 16-32 kg (35-70 pounds) which is as heavy as a large dog. To survive beavers need trees and water. Trees provide beavers with food and wood for building. Water keeps them safe. Beavers can swim away from danger. Beavers are plant eaters. They feed on tree bark all year round.
In spring and summer, they also eat new green plants. They have razor-sharp teeth for cutting trees. A beaver's back teeth grind up wood. A flap of skin closes behind the front teeth, which keeps water out of the beaver's mouth. Between the back and front teeth is a place that is perfect for carrying sticks underwater. They also have special chemicals in their stomach that helps them digest the bark. A beaver's tail is scaly and about 30cm (12 inches) long. Fat stored in the tail serves as food during winter. Beavers have clear eyelids that protect a beaver's eye and let them swim underwater with their eyes open. A beaver's ears and nose close over to prevent water from going in.
A beaver's long soft fur protects it form insects. Dirt and water helps the beaver blend in with its surroundings. Webbed feet help the beaver swim. Double toenails are used for combing the fur. Most dams are from five to thirty meters long, some are longer than a soccer field. Beaver's parents have a new litter of kits every spring. The whole family helps care from them. Unlike a human a beaver keeps growing for as long as it lives. A dam is a stick and mud wall built by beavers across a stream or river. Castoreum is scented oil stored in glands under a beaver's tail.
A beaver's big back feet and powerful tail push it through water. To speed up, the beaver pumps its tail hard. A fast moving beaver can swim up to 10km per hour (6 miles per hour). Webbed feet make it hard to walk on land. The beaver's tail helps it balance. A beaver's body is long and smooth in the water that helps it to glide. Beavers often stay underwater for 2 or 3 minutes at a time. Water trapped behind a dam forms into a deep pond. The beavers are safer in the deep water. Here they can build a home, store food, and escape from enemies.
Beavers can live up to 12 years in the wild. They are skilful builders. Millions of years ago, beavers lived in many northern parts of the world; some were as big as bears. Beaver families cut down hundreds of trees a year.

After a long day of swimming the otter would roll on the ground or rub on a log to dry themselves. The Oriental Small Clawed Otter can last up to 6-8 minutes under water, so hunting for food is easy. Their forefeet are helpful because they use them to capture their food and “Their hind feet says wildlife explorer states, “Are used for swimming.” “Their eyes stay shut for 40 days after birth,” states the wildlife explorer. According to the wildlife explorer, “Their number of young is 1-6 but usually 1-2.” One of the most interesting facts is that if several otters are swimming in one straight line with their backs out of the water their backs can be mistaken for the humps of a sea monster. Its genus and species is “Aonyx Cinera” that is also the species for the African Otter. Although they are the same species the African otter is much bigger, and weighs up to 75lb and just like the Oriental Small Clawed Otter and the Asian Otter they all have white markings on their faces, chests and throat. The Oriental Small Clawed Otter is one otter that loves to swim and definitely loves to snack on…

otter_aaw2Overall, it reminds me of something that happens nowadays. You know how some people hate the Fall season because they see it as everything dying, drying up, disintegrating? Yet others look at this season as a time of abundance because of the harvesting, beauty because of the gorgeous leaves and happy pumpkins, and yummy food. I guess you could look at otters like the adorable fuzzballs they are, or see them as tricky, untrustworthy creatures.…

Polar bears are extreamly well adapted tohunt their prey under water. Keeping warm is no problem for polar bears infact sometimes polar bears have to lay flat on their stomachs on the ice just to cool of. Polar bears have the thickest fur of any bear species. Their fur has two layers. The first layer, the under coat, is the closest to their body it consists of thick, plush, hair that retains heat. The next layer, the outer layer, is a layer made of "guard hairs" and are not actually hair at all they are hollow tubes. the tubes trap air for insulation andalso reflect a visible wavelengths of light in their hollow air space, which combine to make the fur whiteeven though it is in fact colorless. The white coloring provides camoflauge for the bears allowing them to blend in with there white snowy surroundings. Under their fur polar bears have black skin that absorb the sunlight and under that they have a 4-inch layer of blubber. This blubber keeps polar bears warm in the cold water. Polar bears have fur at he bottom of their feet providing extra warmth and traction to the ice. they are adapted to swim 60 miles without a pause to rest. They have have the ability to reduce their metabolic rate when the food is scarce and again when it's…

It has very thick, transparent fur, which makes the bear appear white. This helps the bear camouflage against the ice and snow. The Polar bear also has large canines for tearing the flesh of seals, fish and whale carcasses. Because it spends so much time in the water, the Polar Bear is considered a marine mammal. Consequently, you would expect it to have adaptations for swimming. It absolutely does. The Polar bear has several adaptations that enable it to swim. Its front paws are wide and slightly webbed to help propel it through the water. These larger than normal paws also act like snowshoes and help the bear walk over snow and ice without slipping or sinking. The Polar bear can even dive to find food and has been observed diving to depths of up to 6 feet. Once out of the water, special oils in its fur helps it dry quickly to reduce heat loss. The Polar bear has other adaptations that keep it warm as well. It has very thick skin and an extra layer of insulating fat which can be over 4 inches thick. It also has smaller ears and tail than other species of bears which reduces heat loss. A Polar bear is actually more likely to overheat than to…

they use their filaments like mobile spider webs. They extend these into the surrounding water to ensnare particles of food falling from above. The filaments are covered in tiny hairs, probably for catching these particles. Section 1: Manatees belong to the order Sirenia, which also includes the manatee’s relative in the Pacific, the dugong, (Dugongdugon). Sirenians evolved from four-footed land mammals more than 60 million years ago. The presence of tiny pelvic bones in manatees, shaped differently in males and females, is evidence of their terrestrial ancestry. The closest modern relatives of the Sirenia are elephants, aardvarks, and hyraxes, small furry mammals that resemble rodents. These animals are large, fully aquatic, mostly herbivorous marine mammals sometimes known as sea cows. They are varied in color from dull gray to brown or black. They all have stout, tapered bodies ending in a flat, rounded tail used for forward propulsion. The forelimbs are modified into flippers; there are no hind limbs. There are three accepted living species of Trichechidae, representing three of the four living species in the order Sirenia: the Amazonian manatee (Trichechus inunguis), the West Indian manatee (Trichechus manatus), and the West African manatee (Trichechus senegalensis.…

Under the polar bears thick, white fur they have black skin that reflects light of the freezing arctic landscape. Their fur is oily which helps them to be water repellent; the polar bear's solid fur and a remarkably thick layer of fat under its skin protect it against the cold temperatures of the ice .The fat is important when the bear is swimming, because the fur cannot keep the insulating air trapped in it. The hairs are hollow, so the black skin underneath can absorbed light from the UV rays; these genetic traits allow them to have a better chance of survival in temperatures below zero. The polar bear’s fur grows from 5 to 15 cm long. The growth of the fur is the same amount of insulation from the cold that the polar bear receives. The physical features that defined this species include longer neck and head; this trait allowed the polar bears to reach for their prey. During the day polar bears can locate seals from a long distance. The polar bears are patient when it comes to stalking their prey. They flatten their bodies on the icy surface, their forefront feet are under them and only their hind feet provide the force when moving closer. Sometimes they push a small blocks of ice in front of them to camouflage their dark noses, or cover their noses with their white paws to avoid their prey from seeing them. Polar bears spend a lot time in water; the use of the polar bear limbs in…
