Description of Montag’s first day:
The first day in Ray Bradbury’s dystopian novel „Fahrenheit 451“ seems like the Awakening of the protagonist Guy Montag. After fulfilling his duty as a fireman, what means that he has to burn books, he meets the 17-year old girl Clarisse McClellan, who changes his life. She reflects things and thoughts he has dissmissed in past, and asking him questions he is not able to answer. She, definitely a thinker and philosopher asks why, instead of how, what irritates him a lot. Because of her, he realises that there is something important missing.
That his happiness is only an illusion.
Although trying to dismiss thoughts about Clarisse’ words, she has left a huge impression.
Later at home he finds his wife Mildred nearly dead after trying to commit suicide by taking sleeping pills. He doesn’t know why she has done that, but he was very shocked and surprised.
Then two operators of the emergency hospital transfuse new blood with a machine. There are too many cases so that the machines have to replace the doctors. Guy realizes that people are strangers to him, while the world is changing, and everything changes with the world.
Characterisation of Guy Montag:
Guy Montag is the protagonist of the dystopian novel “Fahrenheit 451” written by Ray Bradbury first published in year 1953.
He is a thirty-year-old fireman, whose profession it is to burn books.
Guy Montag is named after a paper manufacturing company.
Montag is a character, who is easily influenced by others.
Although he is obviously a hero, whose actions can be sympathized by readers, (because he is sensitive, compassionate and self reflecting) his character is too naive and simplistic and his actions not controlled or coordinated, what makes him kind of dumb.
His character seems to change with the time.
