overall that stuck out to me.
The first item that stood out to me was how privileged we are here in the United States. I believe many of us take for granted what we have because we don't think about what would happen if we were not to have it. For example, the education here in America is fantastic. I did not realize that people from third world countries view America as the place to go if you want to get a good education. Daniela Araujo- Jones, as well as Priscila Medrado, who are both from Brazil, told us that public schools are not an option for children in Brazil. If their children were to get a quality education they would have to go to a private school, which cost a lot of money. Therefore, families would sacrifice all they had for their children to go to those private schools. The reason this stuck out to me because public school here is almost as good as a private school.
Secondly, I learned how different the food here is in America.
All of the immigrants agreed to this statement because the food here is not authentic. Joanne Zhang, from China, explained how sweet and sour chicken is nothing you would find in a Chinese restaurant in China. Everything is Americanized here so that people will like it better. Esiquio Cortes also said that places like Taco Bell are not Mexican at all. The type of tacos they have at Taco Bell could never be found in Mexico. Additionally, Daniela and Priscilla also agreed with this statement. Describing how some of their favorite fruits are more expensive, less sweet, and even smaller in America compared to Brazil's. I can relate to this personally because I have been to Barcelona and I know how cheap and delicious the fruits are there.
Lastly, and maybe more importantly, I learned that it is imperative to go out and travel. I could tell how important this was because when Esiquio said traveling is important, everyone shook their head in agreement. Since I have been out of the country before, I understand where they are for coming. You understand more about the country to travel to as well as yourself. You realize things you thought were once extremely important don't matter, or maybe the things that once did not matter most now. The world is a crazy placed filled with different adventures wherever you
go.
Furthermore, I can not imagine what some of these immigrants had to endure to become an American; I am glad to have been given the privilege of meeting and talking to them. They were all so kind and open about their life stories which I know would be hard for some people to discuss. This interview has been a true eye opener.
