Essay About Rape On College Campuses
This definition has changed over the time because of a lot of factors. Before there wasn't a clear understanding on how rapes could occur and to whom as well. Sadly, it has changed because all the cases of rape that showed the definition wasn't right. Now, there's a better understanding on it, just as not only women can be the victims and that it's doesn't have to involve force due to that victims can be drugged. What can we do about rape on college campuses? I'm pretty sure that first that comes to everyone's mind is education. I don't know about other schools, but UMass Amherst make students take a mini course about sexual assaults, rape, drinking and another stuff, which I think it's a great idea from them because in some way it helps a lot. …show more content…
Students need to take it if they don't to want a hold in their account, which it stops them from registering for future semesters etc, etc,. If there are campuses that do not do that yet, they should do it because it will definitely help. I mentioned this quote in the last assignment that I like from President Obama that is in the book “ I want every young man in America to feel some strong peer pressure in terms of how they are supposed to behave and treat women”. This has to be both ways. Another thing that it can be done it's to take all the cases of rapes on their campuses and get something meaningful about it (this will help prevent it and help victims to recover this awful experience) I'm saying because there are few colleges who like to hide this kind of situation. They shouldn't be embrace that it happened in their college if they show people and future students that they did and are doing something about it. Also, I think there should better way to punishment for the people who commit rape not matter if it's a woman or a man. They need to know that rapes is not a game. Am I agree with the changes? Yes, because it has changed for the

I believe that these sanctions are beneficial because they allow students to receive the resources and help needed in the unfortunate event sexual harassment and misconduct has been reported. In addition, the sanction force universities and colleges to keep track of the sexual misconduct. With the stricter rules, the sanctions implemented toward disciplinary action will protect students from repeat actions from an alleged student and it will help to reduce the number of incidents that goes unresolved. On the other hand, with the stipulation of imposing fines the schools will be motivated to make sure that cases regarding sexual misconduct will be resolved and victims are…

Boswell, Spade, Scully and Marolla explore and examine the perception of rape. Boswell and Spade’s article on collegiate rape culture focuses on the different environments and their effect on gender relations. Scully and Marolla’s article on the vocabulary of rapists mainly focuses on how rapists explain and justify their actions. Fraternity brothers and convicted rapists share certain perceptions and reactions towards rape and its victims. They are both involved within a pervasive rape culture that blames female victims for their attacker’s crimes, but it denotes rapists as insane criminals, which leads to the invisibility of rape culture within the ‘normal’ society.…

Schools tread lightly on the topic of rape. Every 107 seconds, an American is sexually assaulted- 44% of victims under 18. Victims of assault could be cut down by nearly half if students learn that rape is utterly unacceptable, yet schools choose not to because it insinuates that their students could all be potential rapists. Anyone has the ability to commit a sexual assault,…

The PBS Frontline documentary “Rape in the Fields” reveals the gross atrocities of human rights violations against undocumented immigrant women throughout America’s vast farmlands. The group consists of a half-million female workers. Culturally they are from a male dominated society that migrates to the U.S. for economic opportunity. These women are underprivileged workers without access to learn English. They are unaware of American laws that protect persons from violence and crime. They are very afraid and focused on basic survival instincts. Because they are in this country illegally, they are afraid of being deported and lose their income. Fear keeps them from speaking out and uniting to make changes in their work environment.…

    A Rape On Campus Summary

Rolling Stone’s “A Rape on Campus” was one of the most scandalous journalism mistake ever seen. How a magazine such as Rolling Stone could publish an article that was a complete and total lie, is beyond me. In my opinion, Sabrina Erdely ignored many red flags that should have brought up some skepticism about the story she was reporting on. When Erdely first heard Jackie’s story she said, she remembered being “a bit incredulous” about the vividness of some of the details Jackie offered. This should have been the first red flag that something about this girl’s story was off, but Erdely believed that Jackie’s story was reliable so she continued. Another warning sign would be how Jackie was a “challenging source”. Not only would Jackie not respond to Erdely’s calls, texts and emails, but she also refused to release the name of the man who organized her attack. When Erdely finally did get the name of the man who had overseen her assault, Jackie was unsure how to spell his last name.…

In four short years, Missoula, a college town in the state of Montana, experienced a leap in the number of campus rapes and sexual assaults reported to the police. Very few victims and accusers were taken seriously by the local police department or the university. The prevalence of this epidemic is appalling and apparent in not only college towns, but the entire country. The only way to curb this problem is to bring light to the issue. By requiring college students to read and discuss Missoula in school, students and teachers will be more inclined to come forward and report their abuse while simultaneously giving other victims a voice. Meanwhile, people that have raped or will rape in the future will become aware of their actions and the punishment.…

The contention that rape should be regarded as an asexual act has done nothing to remedy this. Nor will it. As activist and writer Wendy McElroy points out, "there can be as many motives for rape as there are for murder and other violent crimes … Rape is every bit as complex." Insisting that no rape is ever "about" sex but is rather about an individual man acting on a patriarchal mandate to sow terror by exercising "power" does a disservice to us all. (qtd. in Baker)…

It is shown all over the world and sometimes we don’t even realize it. It is not at all uncommon to hear things like “that test just raped me” on campus. Because of my past experiences, I do not use phrase like that, but I cant say I speak up when they are used. It is difficult to speak up when someone uses the word out of context because it is so common to hear, and I know the people saying these phrases do not actually mean to offend anyone. I believe the reason rape gets thrown around like it is nothing is because society has made this image of it not being that big of a deal. For example, the video talks about how 3 of 100 rapists will ever go to prison; it is this kind of leniency that makes rape culture increase. In most cases, victim blaming occurs. The video explains victim blaming as the act of blaming the victim by what they are wearing or how much they drank. After covering this topic and reading the chapter, I believe a huge part of my best friends story had to do with victim blaming. She was so criticized for putting herself in that situation that the rape occurring did not seem to matter, as if the boy had the right to do so just because she was out number and hanging with older boys. It sickens me that society has allowed rape culture to even become a topic, and it has come this far. The occurrence of rape taking place on college campus is scary, and the statistics…

As research unveils that women, regardless of age and race, have a high risk of experiencing sexual assault, the U.S. Government has responded with differing attempts at definition of sexual assault and legislature that protects victims. Over the years, these laws and policies have transitioned into providing more concrete definitions of sexual assault and rape, who is at risk, and where do victims go for help. For example, the Uniform Crime Report (2004) defines forcible rape as “[t]he carnal knowledge of a female forcibly and against her will.” A further definition of carnal knowledge is provided and incidents where it would be considered forcible rape. More recently, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (2009) released a Frequently…

Sexual assault is very common. For a bad act as this, it is surprising how frequently assault occurs. Sexual assault is the most pressing issue faced by a younger generation that is not being addressed adequately, and while plenty of research is being done, not so much action is being taken. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) “National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS), nearly 1 in 5 women and 1 in 71 men in the United States have been raped at some time in their lives, and nearly 1 in 2 women and 1 in 5 men have experienced other forms of sexual violence victimization in their lifetime" (CDC). The problem of sexual assault is terrifying because rather than declining, it has become rampant. However, if people are taught about how horrific sexual assault is at a young and impressionable age, the high rates of sexual assault would decrease significantly. When the Association of American Universities conducted research on sexual assault in universities, the results were shocking. 11% of female…

In many cases, students only know the basics about sexual assault such as, how horrible it is, but if colleges and universities incorporate a class about why it is horrible, students can expand their knowledge.
