Application essay to the teacher certification program
My goal is to complete career transition from the financial services industry to education and teaching.
My short and long term objectives are:
a) To obtain the Type 29 transitional bilingual certificate during 2009 while pursuing the Teacher Certification program
b) To obtain a teaching position as a Spanish teacher in 2009
c) A long term goal is to pursue a master’s degree in education once I have sufficient experience as a teacher
The certification program will help me to achieve my goals by providing the theoretical and practical knowledge I need to develop my skills as a teacher.
In my 10 years of experience in the financial services industry, I had the opportunity to conduct presentations, and train and educate diverse groups of individuals in various settings. I found these parts of my job to be the most rewarding. Second, as part of an alternative medicine program I am currently pursuing, I have assisted with teaching Shaitsu at the College of Healing Arts. Third, I have on several occasions taught young children Spanish on contract bases. Finally, the satisfaction and joy I experience when teaching and interacting with students makes me confident I will enjoy and be successful pursuing a career in education.
Over the last few years I have developed relationships with several people who dedicate their time and effort to make a difference in the world by touching people’s lives through the sharing of their knowledge and values. These teachers and mentors have had an impact on what I perceive matters the most in teaching and in life: respect, appreciation, and service.
I think it’s important to demonstrate and teach respect for our diversity of backgrounds, thinking, and perspectives. Appreciation for our differences and contributions as unique individuals is extremely important. Finally, an ethic of service to our schools, communities, and each other is important to cultivate in students and colleagues.
My teachers and mentors have inspired me to serve in education by modeling their knowledge and affirming values, and I look forward to helping advance the principles of respect, appreciation, and service with the students, administrators, and colleagues with whom I will work.

Since I was initially a nursing student when I entered college, I had never considered becoming a teacher. Ever since I can remember, I have always wanted a career where I could serve others, and I always believed that being a nurse would allow me to achieve this goal. Still, I fell in love with the education field the moment I started volunteering and aiding in my aunt's classrooms, which they taught grades TK– 4. I immediately changed my major because it makes me feel extremely fortunate to think that one day I would be able to teach, laugh, and help my kids in the same manner that my aunts do. To begin with, I worked as a student intern, as a tutor for the Advancement Via Individual Determination program for four years.…

I strongly believe that teaching diversity and acceptance of differences is one of the most important concepts that can be accomplished by a teacher. We in America have so many different ethnic groups and races, that it makes it even more important to be able to accept diversity. In the classroom, these differences should be celebrated as a positive learning experience. Unfortunately, in the dictionary, the word diversity comes just before the word division, and some educators teach diversity as such. When diversity is taught, it should be done in a way that brings everyone together, not…
