The independent action of medical school, the teaching hospitals, the American Board of Medical specialties and ACGME affects the number, preparation and type of physician and even the distribution of the specialties within the physician workforce. Per our text, there were predictions that either physician shortage or physician oversupply. Regardless of the increase in physician shortage or physician oversupply, the geographic variation in physician location versus the physician numbers is always a problem. There is a continued low supply in less attractive rural and inner-city areas that most medical graduates do not want to take. With foreign medical graduates, proper clinical assessment and training before entering the residency, there was…

“Curiosity is one of the permanent and certain characteristics of a vigorous intellect.” The curiosity that Samuel Johnson refers to in this quote is something that I feel itching at me every day, especially since I have begun my journey in the world of medicine. Through my experiences, I have realized that Internal medicine is the field in which I will be able to use my compassion towards others, not only to help them, but also to constantly nourish my own curiosity for medical knowledge.…

Why become a physician assistant (PA) over a doctor (MD) or a registered nurse (RN)? Although the duties of a RN resemble those of a PA, PA’s have more responsibilities and the ability to prescribe medication, plus the salary is a lot better. Of course with more responsibilities comes more education, while RN’s only require a 4-year degree, becoming a PA requires the completion of a 2-3-year physician assistant program. I decided to go for PA instead of MD because I do not want to go to school for another 6 years or put myself hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt. As a physician assistant, I get to perform the same duties as a doctor with the exception of surgery; I could assist in surgery only under supervision of a physician. Another reason to choose PA over MD was the flexibility when it comes to specialties. Doctors are required to choose a specialty and…

Being a doctor is both a rewarding and a challenging career. Physicians examine, treat, and diagnose patients and ultimately save lives. Doctors can practice general family medicine, internal medicine, or specialize in one area, such as pediatrics, cardiology, neurology, or gastroenterology. A doctor who practices internal medicine is called an internist. According to the American College of Physicians, “general internists handle the broad and comprehensive spectrum of illnesses that affect adults, and are recognized as experts in diagnosis, in treatment of chronic illness, and in health promotion and disease prevention” (“About Internal Medicine”). Many internal medicine doctors will serve as the primary care provider for their patients and…

The journey to medical school has by no means been an effortless one. Choosing the non-traditional route to complete my studies has not only equipped me with the maturity necessary to excel in medical school, but also the knowledge required to overcome the challenges I may encounter during my journey. Upon completing my undergraduate studies at FSU, I subsequently went on to complete additional post baccalaureate science courses at both Miami Dade College and Florida International University. Also, I have recently completed my Masters degree in Biomedical Science at Barry University. During my undergraduate and graduate years, I maintained full time employment, which has taught me the art of time management; a trait I believe will be essential to my success while in…

Even up to this moment right now, I have always seen myself growing up to be some kind of medical professional, but only recently have I decided that the road to becoming a doctor was one too long and too rigorous for me. Because of this realization, I believe a physician assistant would be a good career for me. As a PA, I will still be able to help people but I won’t have to sacrifice what I feel is a large portion of my life.…

Ever since I remember I wanted to be the same thing my sister was. Everywhere I would go with her or talk about something I would always remember telling her that I wanted to be like her. As years went by and I started to grow up I started to realize that what she works on is not what I want to be I want to be a makeup artist or a chef. Ik that is what she was was a great job as well, but that’s not what I wanted to be anymore. I know that being a medical assistant is nothing bad it's just that that isn't what I want to do anymore it doesn't catch my attention. One of the hardest things I think I would have to tell her is that I don't want to be what she is right now. I think it's great that I want to become something different than her because…
