Essay: I Want To Pursue A MD-Phd Degree
Through my research experiences and time spent with patients, intertwining my research with treating patients is a unique opportunity presented within an MD-PhD degree. Since May 2015, I have been simultaneously working in an optometry clinic while performing numerous genomic research projects. While walking to class or waiting in line, I read about the genetic basis of conditions of the eyes, or conditions that could be treated with Cannabis, which began to satisfy my need to combine research with my clinical work. Looking to continue my research while on my path to medicine, I began contemplating possible degrees that would allow me to achieve my goals. Deciding to pursue an MD degree was a decision I have thought over many times; although, questioning the amount of research I would be able to perform as an MD was a new question that arose soon after beginning my research career. …show more content…
Although, either way I thought of it, I saw myself leaving one degree program to begin the next without seeing an opportunity to fully express my talents with one degree and not the other. After being recommended to an MD-PhD program by my professional investigator, I began to speak with students in this program to learn more about their lives academically and personally. The first student I met with was in his 2nd year of his PhD program. I was in awe of the research he performed; however, his personal life did not seem balanced with the demanding schedule of his research and coursework, I was left unsure if this degree was for me. However, realizing that one opinion would not accurately describe a program, I found other students and graduates to talk to, which immensely changed my perspective on this degree program. I began to see the opportunities that are present within the combined MD-PhD

Slavery formed the backbone of the South economically. It was just as much the political and social basis of Southern identity, too. With the invention of Eli Whitney’s cotton gin, southern plantation owners had to buy more slaves to keep up with the demand for cotton. There was an ever-present demand, particularly by Northern states, for cotton. There became a growing economic dependence on slavery. James Henry Hammond’s manual, Instructions to His Overseer (c. 1840-1850), was designed for use on his large South Carolina estate. He was a strong supporter of slavery and the originator of the famous line, “Cotton is king.”…

The journey to medical school has by no means been an effortless one. Choosing the non-traditional route to complete my studies has not only equipped me with the maturity necessary to excel in medical school, but also the knowledge required to overcome the challenges I may encounter during my journey. Upon completing my undergraduate studies at FSU, I subsequently went on to complete additional post baccalaureate science courses at both Miami Dade College and Florida International University. Also, I have recently completed my Masters degree in Biomedical Science at Barry University. During my undergraduate and graduate years, I maintained full time employment, which has taught me the art of time management; a trait I believe will be essential to my success while in…

A dual-degree program offers the physician researcher the opportunity to hone his/her research skills and work directly with a mentor who may have already successfully navigated the granting process. In 2004, the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine noted that there were only 26 osteopathic medical students enrolled in a dual-degree program.6 It is unclear which specialty these students chose to practice medicine in; however, it would make up the minority of practicing osteopathic physicians regardless. Without this prior training in the rigors of academic medicine, it is difficult for a community-based physician to be awarded an R01 grant.…

As a child growing up I think I always wanted to work in the medical field, seeing my mother as a LPN. I also have always had a natural interest in the medical field because I like to watch a lot of ER and hospital shows. At first I didn’t really know what health career I wanted to pursue. I just knew that I liked being in the healthcare class and learning about the different health science careers and what they do. I think a medical office administration assistant would be a very good career for me because I am very helpful and can always be counted on when people need me. This is not my only career choice, it’s just the first I want to pursue. One year after graduation I will hopefully have my medical assisting certificate or at least be working on getting it. Around my five year mark I want to try to get a degree from a nursing school and become licensed as a registered nurse. Ever since I remember I wanted to be the same thing my sister was. Everywhere I would go with her or talk about something I would always remember telling her that I wanted to be like her. As years went by and I started to grow up I started to realize that what she works on is not what I want to be I want to be a makeup artist or a chef. Ik that is what she was was a great job as well, but that’s not what I wanted to be anymore. I know that being a medical assistant is nothing bad it's just that that isn't what I want to do anymore it doesn't catch my attention. When Cayli, my daughter, started kindergarten I started talking to her about going to college and how it was the most important thing she could do for herself. In turn she would ask me what kind of degree did I get and I would look at her and tell her that I did not go to college and this is why I wanted her to so she would not have to live paycheck to paycheck like her father and I did. After awhile, I started to feel like a hypocrite every time I would insist she went to college and not going wasn't an option. I knew in that instance that I had to go back and get my own college degree.…

Former President Theodore Roosevelt said “Far and away the best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.” Finding that “work worth doing” has been quite the challenge for me, but I believe I have found it now. Medicine was not the first passion I sought. It was actually to become a pilot because my father used to be one. But possibly pursuing a career in the healthcare industry did come about when I was 9, after I saw pictures of my dad’s arthroscopic knee surgery and the x-ray which completely amazed me. Seeing my dad’s recovery process from such a major operation, along with multiple family members and friends become physicians themselves gave me much insight to the profession. I was able to see a knee operation similar to my dad’s while shadowing Dr. Robert Foster at Texas Orthopedics, where I was also allowed to stand right next to Dr. Foster and assist in handing him the surgical tools and listen to him telling me exactly what he is doing throughout the procedure. And then, following a morning of operating was the afternoon clinic hours at which I got to see the patient-doctor interaction happen, where I got to see assurance of recovery in the patients and trust in the doctor develop and grow. The experience only kept encouraging me to strive for a rewarding career.…

For the last sixteen years I have been working as a professional. In my current professional environment I have found that advancement is limited without some type of degree on your resume. In speaking with my colleagues I have heard many good things about the degree programs offered by ESC CDL. Prior to this application I have participated in two non matriculated classes to both familiarize myself with the online style and to gauge if I was ready to attend college. I have chosen to continue with ESC due to the extreme ease of the online course structure and the willingness of the faculty to assist in any way.…

From a glance the utter brilliance of the human body cannot be appreciated until it is analysed at a molecular level. It amazes me how every cell, tissue, and organ in the body communicates to maintain the body at an equilibrium. Since the existence of humans, we have been prone to disease and illness. As the search of treatments for enduring diseases is growing faster than ever before, I find it exciting that through the knowledge we gain from research we can build a greater understanding of how the human body functions and develop treatments and initiatives that will improve the health of people all over the world. With this being said, I have come to the conclusion that my career must involve research as a major component in conjunction with patient care.…

I was raised with the beliefs that there is an importance of having security in all aspects of life, whether that is financial, physical, or emotional. These were, and still are, the ultimate objectives I have for myself and every action I take and have taken has been formed around this sentiment. My parents taught me that “dreams are the touchstones of our character” and that it is important to dream big while remaining clear on goals and realistic with decisions. On the path to deciding my future, their advice remains with me and assists in establishing myself in the goals that I have set.…

I have wanted to be a teacher since I was 4 years old. I was lucky enough to have amazing parents who let me set up a classroom in our living room and leave it set up for days at a time until they realized my passion for teaching wasn’t going away. Then they let me occupy half of our basement and turn it into a classroom. They got me a whiteboard/chalkboard and even bought me desks. In my head I was the best teacher out there; I was all my imaginary students’ favorite teacher. I feel because this dream started so young I will put forth whatever effort needs to be given to be able to become not only my imaginary students’ favorite teacher, but my future ones as well.…
